Learning so much from babble

Posted by pinkeye on April 19, 2005, at 14:46:42

I have been thinking, that I am learning tons and tons of things from babble. To the extent, that it even overtakes what I learn from my therapy nowadays. Whatever my therapist says, I feel that I have already encountered that question and found the answer in babble already..

But it is kind of personalized for me, so in a way that is effective. But there is just an amazing amazing amount of informaiton here, I wonder how therapists haven't discovered this site and don't read what is posted here. If anyone wants to be a good therapist, he/she should really read babble.

That's what I've thought for a long time, now. But then I'm uneducated and ignorant, you know, about educational matters. It isn't my place to question why this isn't included as a format in T training, as a place to learn. And if I were a therapist, I would imagine this would be a good place to find out what's really going on in the mind/world of your client, you know? I mean, if a person had time. Really, T's should get paid a LOT more money per client hour, to be in a position to see a lot fewer clients, and be mandated to getting support for himself on a continuous basis. Isn't that happening? Is that reasonable? Or not? Don't know why this popped up... I was just thinking about how much Babble's been a part of my life this last year, my ever-evolving self. I hope, anyways. Could all be a hallucination. All of it.

Just realized, part of the reason there has to be distance between therapist and client, and has to be I mean is because how could a T survive it knowin he or she made a fatal error? Right? So, self-defense mechanism says, shut it down. And the best way to do that is through having distance from the very beginning, you know, I mean that authority/subversive distance. THAT's the one I could never ever live with. Because it's b*llshit. It's all a self-defensive mechanism. I'm the authority, not your friend. But really, they should be a friend. you know? And they just can't be, because if they disappoint you, then they've broken a friendship too and hurt themselves. As well as knowing they hurt you.
It's all baloney. The system's just full of ways that lead to corrupt relationships.

Not sure if that is true.. They cannot be our friends. Friends is mutual relationship - between equals where you know and have as much control over the relationship as the other person does. But therapy is not like that.. they know everything about us, and we don't know anything about them. It is naturally a non - equal relationship. It need not be authority/subservice kind of relationship, but it is unequal nevertheless.

I agree with you totally. But gosh, I don't want my current or former T's reading...I've revealed far too much..then again, they'd probably never figure out who was who, unless they had hours and hours to search and read... And if they had hours and hours, well, they wouldn't have time for their families and jobs as T's...okay, I think I calmed myself down.

(Goodness, don't let Dinah see this post..it's one of her fears, and has come to the forefront recently, too...he'll keep his promise not to peek, Dinah, I just know he will)

LOL. I have the same feeling too. But I have infact given this url address to my prev T. My current T also knows the site name, but I didn't give the url specifically to her. My feeling is that they won't bother to spend the time coming here and try to read everything and figure out who I am. And even if they do, they will never be able to figure out who I am.

Of course he will.

For one thing, he thinks internet stuff is beneath him, and he could never live with himself if he found himself reading an internet bulletin board.

And for another thing, he gets most of the benefits anyway since I bring most of the major themes to my therapy in the form of posts. We get to talk about things that don't even apply to me. Or that I'm not ready to admit apply to me. Or that I don't know apply to me.

lol. Or at least he thinks that. He always answers as if I'm bringing up a coded message about myself. "I have this friend who..."

But seriously, if you guys trust your therapists, I'd bring them posts or ideas from the board. Some of our deepest and most personally effective sessions have come from posts or ideas that have no direct bearing on my situation, yet shed light on something about me that I might not even realize.

We won't mention his conviction that I am a bit self righteous and preachy. :P We haven't worked on that one much.

And again, if he reads the board and violates my trust he deserves whatever he gets.

And of course he knows my posting name.

For whatever reason, me trying to mentally picture him having this snobby attitude you describe toward the Internet made me LOL. Really, it's just too funny. Still laughing.

That's an excellent point. I think I trust him enough now..I think. I would bring in something I've posted, even about him, I believe. I guess mostly I was flashing back to threads where I went on for 6 paragraphs re: old T., describing him physically, along with the accompanying "it's getting hot in here," - type remarks from me. {blush} That I don't think I need old T. reading. Him knowing I had a crush on him, and a bit of erotic transference, from time to time, is one thing. I was in control of precisely what words were used and which details he got to know. On Babble, I'm been, let's say, waaaay too honest.

> We won't mention his conviction that I am a bit self righteous and preachy. :P We haven't worked on that one much.

Uhhh, wait a minute. Self righteous and preachy needs work? Huh?! Say it ain't so! Oh my, I'll be in therapy ever so much longer than I thought if we have to go there... :-)

I've only been here for about 2 weeks. I've been in therapy for over 8 years with the same T. I've been glued to this site. I've learned so much!!! For one that my pain and confusion is pretty normal.
I am amazed at the way people can express themselves with words. I hope I can do this site justice as I continue reading and becoming more comfortable writing myself. I could have used this place so many times over the years when I was so frustrated with the process of therapy. I've been through hell and back. I'm hoping I'm on a slow and steady climb to healing all that I set out to do. I love my therapist dearly. I told her about this site. She said she wanted the url, but I wonder if she would actually take the time to come here. I would never reveal my name to her or anyone.
Thanks for posting and helping me along my journey.
I hope to help others as well.

That was brave of you! I haven't given mine the URL. In fact, once I used his computer to print out a post I had forgotten to bring, and while I told him I trusted him, he made a big show of clearing the history.

Hmmm... And he claims to dislike the internet.

I wonder how he learned to clear the history. ;)

Hi pinkeye,

I am so glad that I found babble, I need the support of people who get what I am going through.

I hope my T doesn't find this site, though I do tell her things that *my online sources* tell me, so she is probably curious.

Babble posters are the best resource, no offense to any Ts reading this.

there is more experience here than 100 T's put together.
it's incredible.
