OK, I'm nosy

Posted by Dinah on April 16, 2005, at 20:09:13

I wanted to see what hairbrained notions he's likely to be bringing back from the conference he's attending, and I can't locate any possibilities at all!! Monday thru Friday he said. April 18-22?

He said it was for training of him as a psychotherapist, but when I asked him what wonderful things he'd be learning, he blew me off conspicuously. So conspicuously that I wondered if it was something he thought I'd disapprove of, like counseling perpetrators of violence, or conversely something he'd be trying out on me. Like "How to get that client off your couch for good" or "Counseling the dependent client" or "What to do when you hate your client". No, not really.

But why would a normally open therapist suddenly blow off an innocuous question?

I'm reasonably sure it was an opening chit chat while you're getting seated question, so the later content of the session shouldn't have influenced it.

I always worry that he'll learn in a seminar that he should dislodge me from the couch.

The professional literature *I* read says he should dislodge me from his couch. Some of it anyway. Ok, a lot of it.

And I always worry that he'll be convinced that he should get rid of me.

I hate continuing education.

I trust him to not actually *lie* to me. He's always scrupulous not to *lie*.

Come to think of it, he did blow me off that way once before.

I had seen what was I guess sort of a resume at the old clinic, in the waiting room. It listed as one of his specialties "men's issues" and I asked what men's issues were. Because I never really understand men's issues or women's issues. He blew me off. I guess I, as a female, was supposed to have the content of men's issues a major secret. I suppose that must be one of the issues.

So maybe he's going to another secret men's issues training clinic.

It's so maddening to be blown off when you ask a serious question. He probably blew it off because he couldn't put the right words together, he was maybe too lazy to formulate an answer. I believe people do this frequently.. really.
