Spring and Suicide

Posted by Susan47 on April 13, 2005, at 10:44:38

Is it possible that spring, with it's brighter, longer days and hopeful aspect, could make a depressed person suicidal? Yes. But why? Is it possible that the energy that drives depression could be the same energy that gives spring its life, the sunny, hopeful energy twisted into a negative, a thing that attacks the psyche instead of refreshes?

I think so. Because energy just is, and our thought determines what we do with it. Hmm.

But does energy have a personality? Like, fall has a darker energy than spring and a wilder energy than winter .. winter has a brittle, quick energy ... and summer, a slow, languid one ... I love summer ...

all winter long, we pray for spring and believe that things will just be better once spring is here.

When it arrives, we realize that nothing has changed at all except the tempature....hopelessness sets in once again...

For me, I feel so much better when winter is over. Especially in Indiana, when winter is cold, dark and depressing. I love spring, I can get outside and feel the sunshine and garden.

The temperature is also in our minds, and somehow we have to change that internal temp, to what we want to feel, but first, somehow, somewhere early in our life, we have to have had a synaptic connection made .. if we haven't, it's so much harder to make it the first time in adulthood .. but it CAN be done .. it Can, I know that because I made it, once, twice ... and even though I have to be induced to make it again, and again, I know the pathway is there .. but can I follow it as I'm withdrawing from my drug, that is so frightening .. I need to do that, in order to make something out of this internally shattered world.

In a movie, both the hero and the villain will have lots of energy, and lots of smartness.. The difference is that one is using it for the good and optimistic way of life and in construction, and the other is using it for destruction and for propagating a negative way of life.

So I think energy is one, just what you do with it makes the difference.

I found what Dr. Roth said as very thought provoking...

If it is true that you are able to stop yourself; that makes it a crutch- not an addiction. A very wise man...so to put his post and your last one together, I would say that perhaps you should be less critical of yourself for using a crutch AND find more constructive ways to mend those pathways so that you don't need a crutch...

Sound at all useful?

I'm afraid my GP would disagree. I saw her last week and what she said made me feel awful. But I'll come to a conclusion soon enough, one that works for me, I hope. Because today, Sunny, see you're not the only one, today I felt like a miserable failure at my life.
I just can't seem to "get" anything, really. I'm unfocussed and handling everything badly, or not handling it at all .. and it isn't until I get a kick from some direction that I feel like fighting for anything. I feel sometimes like there's no fight in me. But there is, really, isn't there? Isn't there SOMETHING in here?

Okay I feel better now. It's not true that I don't handle anything. I'm just my usual disheartened self these days. It's so hard when everything has to come from myself, I hate being alone. I really really Hate It. I'm not good, alone. I don't do well. Not at all. Few of us do, really.

Just wanted to say, that none of us should really have to stay alone. It is the most cruel thing in the world - to stay alone. I am with you. Try not to stay alone - take a roomie or someone. It would really help.

Just food for thought. Do you have any pets? I know when I am in a depressive state, I think about my dog and how sad she would be if I werent there for her...

now, see, for me, that just makes me feel MORE desperate and over-burdened...

worrying about my cat creates a trigger to creating an actual plan which would let me do it after the cat is squared away instead of it just being a thought of how much easier things would be if I weren't alive zooming through my head...

weird perspective, hunh?!? Yes, I know I'm strange...

It's funny you should say this as I have actually felt the tone of your posts changing in the last week or so, a sense of growing stronger or something. Can't quite explain what I mean but it's a tangible feeling.

Of course I'd offer to come and stay with you a while but it's a bloody long way to swim/walk.

Not strange or weird at all sunny. Apart from you guys my dog is my whole world. If I'm honest it's been that way pretty much all my life. I've been away twice (a week each time) in the 10 years that I've had her. What I'm trying to say is that I know exactly what you mean cause I feel that way too some times.

It's hypomania darling.
But it's okay. I can live with it, I can handle it, it doesn't have to go over the top. Because somehow, I can control it without necessarily beating myself over the head with bad thoughts to try and counteract the mania ... which is a lifelong pattern, you see. Ah-hah. As long as the depression doesn't come, somehow I think I can live without the depression. Hopefully I can re-wire that, you know? Oh yes, and my AD's must be helping too.
And you don't have to swim, can't you fly? You know, flap, flap ... ?

another way to think about it is that if you can control it- as you seem to be doing so far- it isn't hypomania... it's energy and happiness! Not every feeling is a disorder!

And you deserve happiness!

MMMMMMMMMMWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

I send love to you too, Damos. I do. You feel so deeply and I hope it won't always be this way for you, because feelings can be misleading, they can overwhelm our reason.. I wish for you all good feelings soon, not these bad ones you've been having. Damos, you are so hard on yourself.. why?

It usually tends to be the winter months that do it for me. Though the past year has been really hard all the way around. I'm just so tired of feeling like I'm swimming upstream.

You are so much more than you think you are sunny and you mean an incredible amount to everyone here. You make me want to pull on my Batfink suit and say "My wings are like a shield of steel".

Love ya sunny.
