"What brings you here today?"

They all seem to like that one. Then they'll take a cursory history and ask questions about your current functioning.

If you're at all familiar with the DSM-IV terms, it's amusing to see how directly most of them ask followup questions to rule things out.

And remember, this is a interview by him for you. You get to tell if this is someone you think you might be able to work with. You don't have to make up your mind this time that you want to stick with this person. But you can decide if it's someone you *don't* want to see.

"What brings you here today?" will definitely be the first question. Dinah is right, it will be sort of like an interview, by you and a little by him/her. He might also ask questions analogous to a form you would fill out before meeting a doctor for the first time (do they do that form thing in all countries?), asking about your background and possibly some family history. Depending on why you've decided to go, he/she will most likely ask questions to help them determine the severity of the problem and what other (or underlying) problems exist. The T should make a healthy amount of eye contact with you and listen to what you have to say. He will probably be writing things down most of the time. You should not find his manner offensive. Again, if you don't like him, go to someone else.

Good luck.

How did it go?
Did you like him/her?
Did you feel like he/she was a person you could open up to?

I'm like a mother asking questions after her daughter has had their first date!! :)

Inquiring minds want to know

I'm glad it went well enough, but I'm curious.

Was "What brings you here today?" his first question? :)
