What tv show helped you grow up?

Posted by happyflower on April 12, 2005, at 9:59:58

Since my parents were not parenting me, I learned many values from TV shows. I know that they were not real life, but it was better than my life I was living plus it showed me what a good parent could be.
Some of my shows was Leave it to Beaver, Brady Bunch, Facts of Life,Cosby Show, etc. I think if I didn't have these shows,I would have never learned any values and I would have probably kept the cycle of abuse going with my own kids. Thank goodness I knew something wasn't right with my parents parenting and my children will never know what child abuse is. They are hugged everyday and told they are loved too. Something I never had growing up. What shows helped you all?

This was the greatest thing that you could have done for yourself - learning from TV shows. I also think it is extremely important to watch good movies, listen to nice inspirational songs, read poetry which inspires you and moulds you.

Lot of time it really substitutes lack of such role models in real life.

I wasn't brought up in the US, so I didn't watch any of these shows but the main things that inspired me are Sound of music (I like to keep that heroine in mind whenever I get dull), and Daniel Steel's Novels. I used to like Ayn Rand's novels a lot growing up, but since then, realized that she doesn't have too much of insight into emotions.

But nowadyas, I try to watch lot of Tom and Jerry cartoons, and any disney cartoons and that keeps my mind light. I like movies like City of Angels, John Q, Independance Day etc. I jsut went to Disney world also.. It was fun.

I think having good teachers as role models helped alot too. Oh, I forgot one, Little House on the Prarie! I wish Michael Landon could be my dad! lol

I was all formed by the time most of those shows came out!!

I definitely remember taking my cue from sitcoms on what family life should be, and from my own family on what it shouldn't be.

But I'm a bit fuzzy on what shows they actually were. The Brady Bunch, of course. Probably some old black and white ones. And possibly some shows that had chosen families as well.

b2c, i love you :)

things are okay... i found a new pdoc and i like her a lot. she seems really smart, although we've only had one appointment. changed some meds around, and i'm feeling a little more human.

work's okay, albeit insanely (no pun intended) boring. i get bored easy, i'm learning about myself. but there are ways around that.

other stuff is... the same.

write me if you ever have time. i pop in here regularly to read posts, but i just feel like i have nothing to contribute... too much going on in my own head, i guess.

love,
ghost
