Cyclothymia or ADHD or Both

Posted by kmdc on July 21, 2004, at 6:08:38

I recently saw a psycholgist because I was convinced I had ADHD. After two sessions, she suggested that there is a good chance that I have Cyclothymia. I am moving soon and can't see her for further investigation.

She said that almost all Cyclothymia symptoms were also symptoms of ADHD. She also said that a particular symptom can only be counted towards one disorder. Thus, if she "allocated" all of my symptoms to Cyclothymia (which they matched) there were no other ADHD symptoms that I had. She gave me a diagnosis of Cyclothymia with "ADHD ruleout". It should be noted that this doc specialized in ADHD and yet she thought that there were more chances that I had Cyclothymia.

Which basically means that a person can either be diagnosed with ADHD or Cyclothymia. Yet, I have read posts on this board where people have been diagnosed both with ADD and Cyclothymia.

Had anyone had a similar experience before that they would be willing to share.

Would really appreciate any help!

IMHO i'm a strong believer in "2 out of 3."
you have some obvious (and justified) doubts, i think you should at least get a second opinion.

I have to agree... get a second opinion... you can definetely have both... that's outright loony that someone would suggest you can't have both...
