The effects of one year of therapy

Posted by Miss Honeychurch on July 1, 2004, at 15:06:04

Today was my one year anniversary of being in therapy. I am feeling very proud of myself today so I wanted to share this with all of you.

One year ago I walked into Bean's office the most miserable I had ever been in my life. My marriage was on the brink of divorce, I had lost 40 pounds in 2 months, I was twitching all over, I was stuttering. I had even lost my ability to smell. But most of all, I hated myself with the heat of a thousand suns. I couldn't concentrate, ignored my family and friends, and had no self-respect.

One year later: I can smell again!!!! My marriage is stronger than it ever has been, I haven't had a hypochondriacal episode in 12 months, and best of all, I am learning to love myself and have respect for myself.

Just in case anyone is interested, I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I have accomplished these strides through the eclectic approach to psychology which Bean incorporates as well as his strong emphasis on CBT.

And you babblers have been a source of inspiration to me. I cannot thank you enough for all the support you have given me this past year. I can only hope I gave a fraction of it in return.

Love to all in Babbleland,
Miss Honeychurch

I think it's really great that you made this progress, and cool that you decided to share it with us. Maybe because it's an area where I am noticeably lacking, I'm always particularly impressed when posters here are able to describe themselves so positively. Mair

This is just wonderful to hear! It's so impressive how rapidly you were able to make such positive changes- many congratulations to you and *Bean*! Did you have any couples therapy, too, or did things just fall into place with your marriage once you overcame the anxiety and depression? What you've been able to do is especially impressive because I think I remember you saying that you didn't take any medications. Was your therapy a combination of CBT and psychodynamic?

That is so wonderful! And I also think it's a really good idea to pause on an anniversary and reflect on things like that.

You really have worked hard, and Bean has every reason to be proud of you. :)

I'm so happy to hear about your success. It must feel just great. And reflecting on it with your T must have been really special. Good for you for taking the time with Bean to reflect. It must be satisfying to see how far you've come.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Here's to continued success!

I suppose it is a combo of CBT with psychodynamic. Aside from the rational thinking, we analyze dreams and talk about my childhood and neglectful parents. It isn't pure rational "here and now" thinking.

And no, I am not on medication, which has been hard I think. I think I would have made quicker progress had I been on medication, but I just didn't want all of the side effects or the expense or having to take medication everyday. I gave myself a time frame too. If after a year I didn't think I made much progress, then I would try medication.

As for my husband, our relationship improved immensly once I got my depression and anxiety under control. He also made major changes by the way, but we never went to couples counseling. But he saw how much I had hit rock bottom and knew he had to change right along with me. My T said a lot of times marriages fall apart when one person goes into therapy because the relationship more often than not depends on the disfunction of one person or the other. Luckily, my marriage got stronger the more I got better.

Congrats! I love your great story! (nm) » Miss Honeychurch
