i think i need a little help

Posted by hopeful74 on June 23, 2004, at 20:37:46

Hi everyone.

I am a new member and orig. posted on the psychiatry (meds meds meds) page about my adderall and effexor issues (trying to get off both) but found that this is prob. where I need to be.
I think I am sort of in a limbo situation as I have not yet found a therapist (seeking out this site happened in conjunction with looking for info on ones in my area.) Funny thing is my mom is a brilliant, gifted psychologist (she specializes with victims of ritual abuse -wowsers!-) and is there for support but has sort of steered clear of giving me any reccomendations which I guess I can understand. In any case, I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice on finding a good therapist to meet my goals and needs. And how do i know when i find her/him? Also - I fear becoming too intimate (in a mentally romantic in my head way) with a male therapist but I feel uncomfortable leaving male doc's from consideration for that reason alone.
Any advice?

h

I really don't know what to say on how to find a therapist. I really lucked out on mine. I did have one before that I just didn't click with, but with the 2 I have now (one for individual and one for group)I feel really good about. I was concerned as well about the male therapist issue. Mine wasn't romantic as much as I am constantly searching for the perfect father in my life (and I am 50!. What I have learned in therapy is the dad I have is pretty darn good, and if treat him with the same empathy I treat my group participants with, we are both happier.

Sorry I couldn't help with finding a therapist - Good luck.

I don't have much experience finding Ts since I have only had one. My daughter has a history of anorexia and her T did family therapy with us. It became obvious that I needed individual help and he twisted my arm into seeing someone. I was in a crisis state and grabbed onto my T as a lifeline and we have clicked. I told my daughter's T that I needed a married male older than I am and he send me to my current T. My T said something at our first session that I will always remember. He said that he would do anything he could to help me, and that if we were not a good match he would recommend me to someone else. If I were you I would try and get a recommendation from someone who knows you and has some idea of what your problems are and what kind of therapy you want. It should ideally be someone who knows lots of Ts and would spend some time trying to match you with someone compatible. My husband asked my T for a recommendation and also clicked with that person right away. My T thought about it for a day or so before he gave my husband a name, first calling her to make sure she was seeing new patients. It is too bad your mom doesn't want to get involved in this way because it seems like she is in a perfect positon to help you with this. Perhaps she has a colleague who you could talk to about a recommendation. I would suggest you ask your family doctor but I think sometimes they don't know much about therapy and just send patients to friends. Hope this helps.

thanks lucy! It does help! -H (nm)
