AAARGH--T ill, Cancelled appt. today

Posted by gardenergirl on May 17, 2004, at 9:23:31

Ok, I know he has a right to be sick. But why today? We are in the middle of some good work. I'm losing sleep thinking about stuff and anxious for another session. Now I have to wait until Thursday! Yipes, this stinks.

sigh,

I know - I just about hold my breath until I'm at the appointment, and my T has had to cancel 2 appointments since I've been going to her. It makes it hard to let myself get too wound up about appointments until a few hours before the appointment. Then I start scrambling and getting my thoughts back together for her. Sometimes I wonder if she doesn't reschedule because she's not up to me that day!!

Oooh! Bummer!

Hang in there. And post a lot if it helps. I *hate* it when appts get cancelled. I've actually never missed a session because of my T getting sick (I must have T's of steel!) but they've canceled for other reasons, and it stinks! At least you have an appt. on Thursday, which is only 4 days from now. 2 days if you don't count today and Thursday.

Agh. My least favorite cancellation reason. Not only do I get upset at the cancellation, but then I load on guilt at being upset, then concern for my beloved therapist.

And then I end up really needing someone to talk to.

since yours canceled and all done's did too, perhaps you ladies could get together and have a practice session in the meantime? a phone session or email exchange to hold you over until you both can see your therapists?

i'm sorry he canceled because he is sick. that's always rough, but especially during 'good' (ha! maybe i should say hard?) work. and then it also brings up other issues of abandonment and anxiety. stay close to your support system while you wait for your next appointment dear. and know that you always have babble too darling. take care of yourself.

My therapist has never cancelled (knock on wood), but I know I would be very frustrated. And then there is the awkwardness of when you do meet again -- do you inquire about their health, or is that too personal?

3 more days and counting. Hold on!

Therapists should not be allowed to cancel appointments. For any reason. At any time.

(Please remember this when you are one of "them")

I extend my sympathy during your time of agony.

Did you meet with the guy who did your evaluation? How did that go?

That stinks! I know how much you need him right now. Mine had the flu in Feb. (I think) and on some really basic level, I got so lost. Illness is a huge issue for me anyway, but I was surprised at how much I was effected by this.

I agree with everyone else. Stay close. Post a lot. Go to Open. Buy new shoes.

Realistically, I'm joking.

But I truly want (and need) my therapist to never let me down. So I guess I would call it a wish.

It is always so hard for me to act in a way that goes along with my knowledge that therapist are people with real lives. And that therapy is their job. And that they need vacations and sick days just like the rest of us. So every time my therapist goes on vacation I steel myself to smile and wish them a good time, and I work so hard to make it until they get back - because they really do deserve it. But it is a fight every single time because I want them, so badly, to stay.

Thank goodness you called and got in that extra session last week (you did, didn't you?). But I can only imagine how frustrating that is. Mine has never cancelled without advance notice in the two years I've seen her. I once commented that she never got sick and I assumed it was because she was so emotionally centered that her immune system was perfect. She then got sick but didn't cancel sessions. Makes me wonder if she has issues with letting people down (like I do).

Thanks for your support!

Dinah,
Yeah, this is the second or maybe third time he has done this. Funny, my appts. are on Mondays. I tend to be "ill" on Mondays, too. I actually look forward to Mondays because of my appt. :(

Sometimes I think he and I have a lot more in common than I realize. He is often late getting started on sessions, and when I talk about wanting to get better with my tardiness, he really downplays it, I think because it is one of his flaws, too.

Thanks,
gg

Thank, Aprhodite. Love the name, BTW

I'm sticking as close as I can to support, but my hubby doesn't always "get it". He made some crack the other day about me cancelling my dentist appt. and the dog's grooming appt. on Friday for a mental health day. Hello! My depression is back. Have I not mentioned that? Can you not tell that by now? UGH.

My mom is all atwitter about her upcoming hip surgery, and my therapy buddy and office mates aren't around as much now that most of us don't have many clients. (The semester recently ended). sigh

Good thing there is Babble!

Thanks again,
gg

Thanks for your sympathy, and I will remember your views on cancellations when I am thinking about cancelling a client. At least I don't cancel my clients so that I can go to lunch with co-workers. The awful office mate did that a few months ago. I was so appalled!

Thanks for asking about my meeting with the boss. I used a tip from my T and "congratulated" him on summarizing a core dilemma of mine in two sentences on my eval. Of course he wanted to know more. It actually was a very good conversation. He went off into projecting and free associating about his own leadership qualities and dilemma. It was as I suspected. His writing that had as much to do with his own struggles with the same issue as it did me. So that made me feel better. It was kind of funny watching him process mostly all alone, though. I just sat there and listened. Occasionally asked a question to clarify, or made some comment. It was like major role reversal. Kind'a cool.

I'm so glad I got to see my T before this, though. I would have been much more touchy and defensive in the meeting. And I know I couldn't just ignore it. I always have to KNOW!!!! Something I need to work on, just letting things roll off at times.

Thanks again!

Hi crushed!
Thanks for your support. I did get to see my T in an extra session last week. It was a really intense session, and I started bawling again when time was up, but I'm SO glad I saw him. All of the Babbler support on calling him helped, because I was really unsure.

Maybe your T is one of those "martyrs" who never misses a day no matter how sick they are. Not me. I'm a big baby. If I'm all snotty with a bad sinus infection, I figure no one wants to see me and listen to me like that. So I would be likely to cancel if I were sick.

Although I have seen clients within an hour of my own session. I always wonder if they wonder why my eyes look so puffy. Once, when one of my older clients was apologizing for crying in session, I pointed it out to her (my own puffy eyes and lack of mascara) and said, "I do it, too. See!"

Take care, and so glad your therapy is going better.

Oh my, sick for a week and a half! That must have been pretty sick. I have to admit, I was a bit upset that I can't get in again until Thursday. He's usually not so busy, but now that the semester has ended, he has taken on most of the continuing clients. The other T's only work during the school year. In fact, a couple more of the people I work with at the center are now seeing him. It must be hard for him to keep straight what he hears about work from whom.

I wonder if all of the meds were on your T's desk when he came back to confirm to his clients that he was, indeed sick? That would be something I would do out of feeling guilty.

I'm still not sleeping well, although I also recently upped my Nardil from 45mg to 60mg. That might be part of it. (I also started taking B-comp, an extended release version. Thanks for the tip!)

Thanks for the support! It really helps.

Good grief! What is it with these therapists just cancelling our appointments all willy nilly? How dare they... ;)

Sorry it happened when you're working on some difficult things. I can definitely empathize with you and I hope you can resume on Thursday and not even remember the interruption.

KK is right (please don't tell her I said that, though). It has helped me quite a bit over the past few days to talk with my friends. I've been finding distraction to be the best method so far. And I have no problem engaging in mutual distraction with my fellow Babblers, so anytime you want to chat, I'm at yahoo - alldone72.

Only one (whole) day left - woo hoo!

Take care,
All Done

AllDone,
Thanks for the support, even if you had to admit that KK was right. I know how much you hate that. :)

I hope you are hanging in there. We had a bit of a flood here at home in the dining room window, but it wasn't a danger. Just an annoyance. And probably thousands of dollars of repairs if we ever replace the siding. :(

Hang in til your next session. Babble has been a great help. Thanks for your email addie. I'll add you to my address book and drop you a line sometime.

right now I am using my anxiety to focus on my dissertation, but I am getting a bit obsessional about it. I suppose that is better than obsessing about non-productive stuff, considering I am approaching deadline.

Okay, I'm babbling. It's late. Thanks for your support.
