Talking too much in sessions

Posted by tinydancer on March 16, 2004, at 6:56:40

Does anyone feel that they have a problem talking too much? It was actually my T who brought it up to me, because I was talking so much that it had become a defense mechanism-talk so much he couldn't get a word in edgewise. I am uncomfortable with silence, and so I think I have a tendency to start talking. I want to stop "rambling" and try to be more focused in what I say so I don't waste time. Anyone else who empathizes or has any tips?

Now that you're aware of it, do you think you'll be able to see when you're doing it and try to change the pattern?

It seems to me that being aware of it is half the battle. That when you find yourself doing it, you could laugh and share that observation with your therapist?

I can waste my time in therapy very easy by rambling and then I leave mad because I paid and didn't really work on anything...I am a pro at this! However, I have found taking in a list and talking specifically about each item keeps me on track and I ramble less as I want to hear the T's response. You might try this...hope it works for you :).

Hmm, I have sort of the opposite experience. I feel like there is a lot of time spent in awkward silence, with him waiting for me to say more and me waiting for him to realize that I'm not gonna say more.
