this is really important to me

Posted by terrics on February 15, 2004, at 11:30:12

Here is another probably rather dumb question, but I would really appreciate it if someone knows the answer.

I have extreme difficulty transitioning from one thing to another. It does not matter what it is. It even happens at work. I used to think I did this on purpose but realize I cannot help it. Does anyone know if it is part of a mental illness? And does anyone know what I can do about it? I can stay in one spot for about 6 hrs. terrics

I know that with certain disorders, especially panic and depression, there is a certain amount of safety in being in one spot. You get yourself contained and this is calming. Moving, changing, interrupting, decision making, etc. causes mild stress (sometimes, not so mild) which is unpleasant. Our minds tend to keep us from unpleasant or uncomfortable tasks.

I would venture it is a safety, comfort issue. You probably need time to get ready for the next thing and it is likely that you like planned out days or tasks. Let me know if I am on the right track. I think there is some stuff in my brain research papers. I'll look tomorrow.

I think you are on the right track, but it feels a little more complicated. terrics

terrics,

First off, I must say there are no dumb questions only dumb answers ;), so here it goes.

It probably is very complicated, but I know I try to uncomplicate things by breaking everything down into the smallest tasks possible. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I'm usually more productive if, for example, I tell myself I have to review one tax return instead of trying to tackle the idea of reviewing the never ending stack of returns that cover my desk.

I know - easier said than done, but I hope this helps anyway.

My T is trying to help me with the same problem. It takes time and a lot of homework. Good luck to ya.

I never thought to tell my T. but I will now. I really thought no one would understand this. Does your T. say why it happens?

Good luck to you too. terrics
