When is it time to call the hospital?

Posted by Camille Dumont on November 17, 2003, at 23:08:48

I think the meds are not working or are in the process of stopping event though I've been ok for about a year.
I feel depressed
I cry for no reason
I feel dissociated ... find myself surfing very bad websites (ash and the likes)
I feel in control right now ... at least enough to not do anything stupid right now

And yet, I wonder wether I should go see a doctor.
I mean if I do attempt something, I don't care but if I decide to try and help myself
then I have to ponder the "after" part ... if I am to live I can't afford to be locked
up in some hospital ... I am rather alone and not having my job would be a problem.
I would also most likely be kicked from my masters program.

So its like a dumb circle
Help myself and risk losing my two main reasons for living
Or not do anything and hope for the better ...

I just don't know what to do...

camill,,i thought we are suppose to live for "who we are" not "what we do"
you will never be a "master degree"
you will be someone with a masters..
you sound so level headed,,mabe you need a med "tweeking" or a few sessions to bring back some focus..
if you having troubles with "impulse control"go make an emergengy app..with any doc you know..they will help asses your situation..
or
go to the er if you cant find help..
many er pdocs there..
remember they want to help you!!it is your right to demand help and get it..

Go to your GP. Or to a pdoc or to a therapist.

Don't wait.

I would try those options before the hospital - they tend to be cheaper...

I hope you will let us know how you are doing. I know that feeling of desperation. It can and will pass eventually. I agree with the others about seeing a regular doc, even an ER one, you need an alternative to going straight to the mental hospital (which is what I assume you're speaking of). Outpatient therapy is an option as well. The docs will let you know if inpatient therapy is needed, and then, if it is, you can go from there and do what needs to be done to get well again. The other stuff in your life can wait. Your health is what's most important. Please let us know how you are doing.

Well, I'm still feeling bad but I'm at my boyfriend's place for a little while so I'm safe.

In the end its probably just my meds pooping out. I just didn't know this could happen. Its also frustrating because I mean Effexor had been working great for me plus I dread the withdrawal effects.

Right now I'm alternating between feeling ok for a few hours and then going back to suicidal thoughts ... but now as bad when I posted.

The other night it was to the point of considering methods and trying to gauge wether I had enough drugs to make a effective mix. I guess fortunately for me, I'm not too impulsive unless the depression makes me spin out of control and go psycho.

Its a good thing that I have pets ... my four little rats are my reason to stay here. If I die then nobody will be there for them ... so I just can't let myself go ... at least until my babies have passed on. I guess zootheraphy really does work.

Anyhow, I wanted to say thanks for your support. This board is really comforting sometimes. Its nice to be able to talk with people who have had similar experiences.

I just found your post, I had been worried about you. I'm glad to know you're still hanging in there. Sometimes it helps to remind yourself that these feelings are brought on by something purely physical and out of your control. Some day we will know more about how to control those chemicals in our brains, but for now it seems to be a guessing game. I hope you will see your doc and consider trying other meds. If you're not already, you might want to consider beginning research on all the meds out there along with your symptoms. I did and I found out things I never would have know just from the doc. Like the fact that some SSRI's are stimulating and some are sedating. Actually they used different words for it, so I had to pull out the dictionary and figure it out, but that's the way I understood it. So someone with bad depression might need one of the stimulating ones like Prozac, while someone who's depressed with anxiety might need something more calming, like Paxil. Or you may need a mood stabilizer, that worked wonders for my brother. Anyway, my point is, you have to do a whole lot of research on your own in order to get better. I'm still in the middle of research myself. Its pretty confusing, especially since most of the time the experts don't even know what they're doing. But I figure its better than being completely clueless. And it gives you back just a tiny, tiny bit of control, which can go a lon-n-ng way. Hang in there and keep in touch!
