I was just reading through some older posts about klonopin, and now I'm scared to take it. I went off of Depakote because I gained 45 lbs. on Paxil, and after going off of it, I could NOT lose it. I thought maybe the depakote (ER) was making me hold on to the weight I gained, so my Pdoc prescribed klonopin and trileptal (sp?) instead of Depakote. Is it likely klonopin will make me gain weight, or make it impossible to lose the weight I've already gained? I'm also pretty sure he will keep me on this long term. Is that dangerous? Thanks in advance for any responses.

I've never EVER heard of anyone gaining weight from benzos. Maybe I'm wrong but I have seen some friends gain on ADs & read other bits about gaining on diff meds, but never a BZD. And that's all Klonopin is - clonazepam. I can't say if it made you real sleepy & slowed you down, whether you'd burn less calories, but the few I've known who've taken clonazepam didn't get drowsy from it - just calm. They've had no wieght gain on it.

I've been on klonopin for many many years and never have I gained a single pound from it. I did however gain a ton on depakote so I'm off that now too. i haven't been able to lose what I've gained while being on it either. So, now I'm just taking the klonopin again like I have so many times before. I will say for certain in my opinion that you will not gain weight from the klonopin. I don't know anything about trileptal though. Sorry.

I've taken klonopin for several years, but only is small doses to help me sleep. I'm about 20 lbs less than when I probably started it although I think my weight loss has absolutely nothing to do with klonopin. I am unaware that it makes people lose weight - although again my doses are pretty small. I think it's the one drug that I would more reluctantly part company with than any other.
