What can I take for fever blisters?

Posted by Maxime on October 12, 2010, at 14:24:22

I have been really with a case of the flu for about 2 weeks now. I have had body aches, I have had fevers ... the works. Despite this, I continued to work. Stupid I know.

Yesterday 5 fever blisters broke in my mouth (inside of cheek and one on my lip). THEY REALLY HURT! What can I put on them to soothe the pain and to make the blisters go away (especially the one on my lip!)

Any advice is welcomed.

I use Zovirax, it's the best thing on the market. Also take a crap load of l-lysine with it too. It helps sooth the herpes virus, from chicken pox, cold sores (fever blisters) right through to shingles!

Why alarm or worry people here unnecessarily? The topic of this thread was cold sores, not shingles. If you are going to bring up shingles, I would think you would know, as a nurse, that there is now a one-time vaccination against herpes zoster (shingles) available for people age 60 and over. No-one needs to suffer through a painful bout of shingles now, and it should not be brought up as another thing to fear about aging.

Thank you! You are right, I don't want to be told I what I *might* get 20 years from now.

Can I use Zovirax INSIDE my mouth? I have never had this happen to me before.

Why not use one of the pain relieving mouth ulcer treatments for the sores inside your mouth?

Yes, I think I will ask the pharmacist. Too bad I can't go today. Today I am resting and am still in cozy PJs at 4:30 pm. This is the restful day I have had in a long time. I NEED to get rid of this cold/flu! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving ... I will see if there anything open.

No, I don't think you can, I'm sorry to have distressed you about other ailments. It wasn't meant to be like that. It's just that I use l-lysine when I get cold sores and so does my dad when he gets shilgles. My uncle is a naturopath and suggest it to both of us. It aids the healing process and has sometimes actually stopped the blister from popping if you get onto it as soon as you feel that first tingle. Good luck M. Zovirax is for external use only so you are right. I wouldn't put it in your mouth. Sorry again

You didn't distress me about the other ailments. It was Phillipa. She said that everyone will get shingles by or in their 60s and that is all she wrote.

Cool, I'd hate to offend you, and not everyone gets shingles anyway. I must admit I personally found it quite a bizarre statement too, as it's just not true.

Seriously though Maxime, get the l-lysine and if they have popped, another great thing for the healing process on the outer skin ONCE the blisters have healed right over is vitamin D capsules with liquid in them, pop it with a pin and rub the oil into your skin for a scar free lip. :) works a treat. I've been doing it for years

Hi Maxime,

I think you should go to the pharmacy when you get chance. The pharmacist will tell you whether Zovirax is suitable for your lip.... and you can use a mouth ulcer treatment to relieve the pain in your mouth. We have Anbesol here for sores in the mouth, I'm sure you have something similar in Canada under a different name. It has a local anesthetic for the pain.

Also, you should ask for a generic version of Zovirax because Zovirax is way overpriced. Well, we have generics here anyway so I assume you do too.

Get well soon.

Weatherfreak sorry you were distressed but I wrote become more common after age 60 which I am. No haven't had them nor the vaccine. Not afraid of them. Next door neighbor had them twice last year. They heal nicely and it's just not a concern of mine. Now aging is another story. Phillipa
