stimulant meds and guilty conscience

Posted by meAgain on May 16, 2010, at 18:58:54

I will admit that years ago when I was in college I abused my ADD meds thinking it would help me get through long nights of studying and I always felt so ashamed. But now that I no longer abuse them but I still feel that guilt. I also feel ashamed for liking the way I feel after I take it. Anyone feel this way or does anyone have feedback..Thank you

These drugs are what they are. They do help some people stay up late and study. It must have been a great temptation to employ them as tools. Even had you become addicted to the euphoriant effects some people experience, it is not your fault that these drugs have this property. Either way, it seems that you took from this a learning experience and have chosen to behave differently. I don't see where the guilt lies. At the very worst, you got caught in a very common trap that you have since extricated yourself from. I think you should acknowledge this accomplishment and gain from it self-esteem. I'm pretty sure that God forgives you. Perhaps you should follow His lead and forgive yourself, too.

Well you shouldn't (if that makes you feel any better). It would be unnatural not to.

I am so glad I decided to post the way I felt..I was too ashamed to even tell anyone about my thoughts on this. I am so thankful for the responds...I felt a release followed by tears. God is so good and merciful. I am still trying to accept that God's love for me is unconditional.I used to believe that I had to earn God's love and get his approval on every little detail of everything I did. I am in awe that God loves us just for being his children! It takes time to let it in.

God made us this way. There is nothing shameful about liking something pleasant. There could be something shameful about indulging in that to the exclusion of all else.

An old (conservative!) friend was dying of cancer, and after a procedure in which she was given a narcotic, I said 'Well, what you've had is like heroin', to which she (sensibly) said 'No wonder they like it'.
