Christ's name

Posted by cockeyed on October 2, 2005, at 23:07:17

I try to avoid this board because I've lost faith, hope and charity. But I wanted to ask what may seem to be a stupid question. Could anyone tell me if Jesus Crhist had a family name. His earthly father was Joseph. But is there any record of Christ having a given family name? I suspect it was aramaic. And I know he was referred to as Jesus of Nazareth. But did folks of the place and era have names such as we now have. This may seem to be a fatuous request, but I'd appreciate if some one could direct me toward an answer. Thanks, Cockeyed.

Last names in ancient Israel (& throughout the ancient world) weren't like what we know today... so Jesus would have been known as "Jesus bar Joseph", or Jesus, son of Joseph (Joseph was actually his "step-father").

And, actually, "Jesus" is a Greek rendition of the original Hebrew name, which would have been Yeshua.

Here's some info I found online:

I read the articles from your link and thought they were all very good. One point for discussion might be found in John 5:26, where it says, "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself". Was Christ's death his own choice? He could cause himself to die at whatever point he wanted. And then, he could resurrect himself. Now, whether he had to grow by grace to get to that point, I don't know. The whole point of being God was to willingly come to earth to do all that for each one of us, individually, he experienced the pain each of us would bear, and knew how to support us through it, if we turn to Him.

I also liked the part that said Jesus was the God of the Old Testament.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading the link, thank-you. And also your explanation of the name of Jesus.

Cockeyed, with all due respect, do you mind if I ask you why you lost faith?

One time, I didnt completely lose faith but I was mad at God, so I somewhat walked away from Him.

Dena, what does Christ mean then? If it was Jewish tradition to name a person after their father, Jesus Christ should mean Jesus, Son of God. Or Jesus Christ Son of God, which is exactly what He is referred to in the Bible. We shouldn't ask, but was he?

John 10:15,17,18
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

There has been a little controversy over what it means to call Jesus Christ, Son of God. My vote is that he is. What's yours? "his name shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God." It fits with your definition. http://scriptures.lds.org/query?words=christ+son+of+god&scripturesearch_button=Search

Jesus Christ literally means "Yeshua [God is salvation] the Messiah [or Annointed One of God]".

He Himself said that He was the Son of God.

But during His time on earth, He didn't call Himself, not did others call Him, "Jesus Christ"... they called Him Jesus, THE Christ (after they'd realized who He was, mostly after His death and resurrection).

So, "Christ" was not His last name, but His title, His identity.

Yes, I believe that He's the only Son of God. And I understand the controversy, which He allows, out of His honor for our free will. And I believe that He loves those who believe in and follow Him, as well as those who don't. He certainly loved me long before I met Him and began following Him. Looking back, I can see His influence in my life, His protection, and His guidance.

Without that, I'd be dead.

Shalom, Dena

As a P.S. to my previous post...

These are my personal beliefs. Like Jesus, I honor and support anyone's differing beliefs. How could I not, when He does?

If He takes fre will so seriously, I should likewise.

I'd much rather hear someone express far-different views of their own faith, out of honesty, than to have someone agree with me mindlessly, just to avoid controversy.

God is too big for any of us to wrap our minds around anyway...! (I for one do NOT want a God limited to my meager understanding!)

Shalom, Dena
