the world's religions

Posted by rayww on July 27, 2005, at 18:41:49

I watched a show yesterday on world religions, and it basically said we should study them, there is truth in all of them, that if we did that we would have more understanding of one another, and not be so quick to blame religion whenever two don't get along.

I must confess I haven't done that, and I don't know that I want to, but if anyone else has or wants to share, I suspect there is far more similarities than differences anyway.

I know God loves all people, in all countries, and think why wouldn't he sprinkle his truth throughout the world?

One that I have grown up with is "no other success can compensate for failure in the home". It isn't scripture, but I think it is true.

Of course the golden rule, "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" is a classic.

On a similar but not specifically religious note... always feel a little irritated when someone who wins a sporting event says something like, "God was on our side today," or something like that. Does that mean that God was "against" the losing team or somehow is "less on their side?"

It just seems a bit presumptuous to me to think God would prefer the Vols versus the Gators in this year's game. Or vice versa. Who knows if God even follows SEC football? Perhaps she's more of a Big Ten fan? Or wait...isn't it Skeeball???

:)

Good to see the two of you still read here. How do you know the win didn't depend on the faith and prayers of just one very special person? God goes to great lengths to answer sincere prayer. And....anything is possible. I can't imagine bragging about the win though.
Very poor taste.

Hey, we can get a topic going on just about anything :)

I dunno where it comes from, maybe the Ancient Greeks?
'When the Gods seek to punish us they answer our prayers.'

I took a class on world religions a few semesters ago just because it sounded interesting. It was excellent. I can say it truly helped me comprehend some of the world's current events, or at least see a logical reasoning to certain issues.

When the Gods seek to punish us they answer our prayers? How so? God immediately blesses us when we keep his commandments. No matter how the world turns this around by twisting the meaning of commandments, it is true, and if you want to know just try it.

Could it have been Oscar Wilde? It sounds a little like him.
