Faith

Posted by rayww on October 5, 2004, at 17:31:21

Is faith real or imaginary? How do we know?
Is it possible to imagine that we have faith, or is faith substance?

This is the "faith" board. How is faith, as it relates to many different faiths, similar to faith itself?

1. Belief: information held confident based solely and completely on testimony. (the reason the courts don't allow heresay or feelings as testimony... toooo capricious)

2A. Faith: a belief held confident regarding the truth, value, or trustworthiness of any people, place, thing, idea [nouns.....lol].

2B. Faith: a belief not dependent on the support of empirical evidence.

2C. Faith: a loyalty or allegiance (as in, to the Monarch or King).

2D. Faith: a theological virtue; a secure belief in, and the virtuous subjugation to, the will of an absolute being.

Since a belief is a tool to make our lives more efficient by not requiring a complete re-evaluation everytime we come upon a dilemma, a belief wouldn't be a good thing to elevate to a status of anymore than it already is. Making a belief a goal or an end, makes a belief something that it isn't and can really never be.

Faith, however, is a different issue. Using the tool nature of beliefs, a belief works perfectly in creating faith. Faith can be an end and a goal. The underlying beliefs can't and won't be, no matter how hard we diligently manipulate the information.

Hope that all makes sense...

Rod

Keeping in mind that the idea here is not to put down the beliefs of others, could you please revise the above so that it doesn't include, for example, Mosiah 3: 12? Thanks,

Bob

Heb. 11: 1
NOW faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

http://scriptures.lds.org/query?words=substance+evidence&search.x=27&search.y=11http://scriptures.lds.org/heb/11/1#1

These Bible scriptures clearly point out that faith is both substance and evidence; therefore faith in God is not simply a figment of the imagination. This scripture also proves that substance and evidence can and does exist outside (or inside) the realm of the known senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound.

It makes wonderful sense.
Thankyou.
Do you see faith as generic or specific?
For instance:
When one believes the "Bible" to be the word of God (as far as the translation is correct), the Bible itself then becomes their personal measuring standard for science and other theories. That is why I feel free to say "the Bible proves" in relation to theories on faith.

I believe the Bible contains the literal word of God, as far as the translation is correct.

Some would challenge my saying "as far as the translation is correct", so If anyone would like to know of discrepencies in translations between the German, Hebrew, and English.....I have a couple in mind, bearing in mind that my purpose for sharing is not to put down another's translation of the Bible, but to embrace all truth as near as we can discover it for ourselves.

rayww,

> Do you see faith as generic or specific?

<<< Faith is an abstract concept. Evaluating the abstract, any abstract, is very personal. For any of the 5,900 religions registered in America, generic and specific are toooo polar to be functional in evaluating theology.
