Where is God?

Posted by Angel Girl on June 30, 2002, at 14:46:10

I was brought up by a mother who always went to church every Sunday and still does. She took all of us children to Sunday School when we were young. My father claimed to be an athiest. Even though I have always and still believe in God, I stopped attending church in my teen years. I don't believe you have to attend church to believe in God. You can worship him and pray to him from anywhere.

Since last summer I've been suffering from severe depression with suicidal ideation and a few months ago my therapist diagnosed me with BPD. I've recently gone through a whole battery of psychiatric tests to find out if I really have BPD. I get my final assessment this Tuesday but in my heart of hearts I KNOW I suffer from BPD. I have all the symptoms. It doesn't take any tests to tell me whether I do or not and if the tests results show I don't then I have to question their ability to test properly.

Anyway, I feel extremely strongly that God has abandoned me several months ago for whatever reason, I do not understand. I think that he has a plan for all of us and he does not always reveal to us what that plan is. I have no idea why I was placed on this earth, what his plan is for me or why he allows me to suffer so much.

But I strongly believe that he is allowing me to suffer, he has turned his back to me. Am I supposed to be learning some great lesson in all this??? If I am, I'm not seeing it. So if I'm not learning it, does that mean I will continue to suffer until I figure it out????

Why does God abandon me when I need him the most?

Growth through the dark times... » Angel Girl

Well here's a story..
An old pastors wife had a GREEN poinsettia plant for about 5 years in her living room. She had company coming and stuck it in the closet to get it outta the way. She forgot about it. Didn't water it or anything. It was in there for over a month, she said. No water, no sun. When she went into that closet for something located in that closet she came across her old plant. It was RED and BEAUTIFUL. Dry as a bone, but great blossoms on it, and in time for Christmas too!
Just like that poinsettia plant, we do most of our best growing through those dark places in life. We learn something from those experiences.. and maybe we don't see it while we are in the dark, but someday it'll be clear. Maybe it was His plan to draw you back to him. I used to agree that people didn't need church to beleive. I know you have trouble getting out of the house, but church or even a bible study of some sort is an awesome thing. The fellowship, the peace, etc. I hope you feel that someday soon - when you get outta the closet you are in.
God Bless you,
Just me

Angel Girl,
I would like to share what I know with you that may answer the questions that you are asking.
I am asking you if you would want me to answer your questions, because the answers that I will give you are answers that I received to the same questions that you have when I was in the City of Peace.
Best Regards,
Lou

Angel Girl,
One of te sigs that God is working in your life is when you are in a trial. You see, God purify us like asilversmith refins silver. He heats the ore untill the impurities rise up out of the silver. But there is more.

Lou

If trial is a sign that God is working in my life then he has taken up permanent residence here and yet there is no improvement to speak of. Other than the pain that I feel every day, I feel nothing else. Is that God working???? I thought God was supposed to be love. If this is love then I want no part of it. I have been searching for love my entire life and it has eluded me. I don't want love that feels like endless pain. Where is the joy and the happiness????

A.G.

OK ,I don't profess to be an expert on the subject, but I will give you my best spin.

God never abandons His children. He does allow us to be tested, He does discipline us (though not in the sense of punishment...as in killing your child because you have sinned). He does purify and sanctify us.

How do we know? How is it different than just the "crap" of life? You have to go to the source with that one, and ask. Sometimes, God will allow us to be humbled until we recognize that WE can do nothing good without Him. It is when we try the hardest to solve our own problems, with OUR strength, that we fail and fall the hardest.

That's the irony of it all, because that is exactly what God wants us to do, to be fully reliant upon HIS strength. Does this mean we won't have bad times, or sorrows or pains? Sorry, but no, it does not. However, when we feel the worst, the most alone, the most forgotten the most tortured....THAT is when we can fall into the arms of God and find a peace of mind that is so incredible that it eclipses our ability to understand.

Why do we think somtimes "Hey God, I'm dying here, why won't you come help me?". You can find the answer to that in John 5:6. Why wait 38 years in hell before realizing "I WANT to be well, I WANT to be healed." But God does expect us to take that first step, the first step that is often the most difficult one we ever choose to take.

Pax, I think you and I might have some of the same faith beliefs... I was wondering if anyone on these boards did...
Thanks also for not posting the scripture and making me open my bible (something I RARELY do during the week). I keep thinking of that commercial, the one the Mormons put out, that has an old guy standing there and the narrator says, "How are you going to tell Him that 70 years wasn't enough time to read His book?" I think 30 years should have been enough, but then the days keep ticking by me. Thanks again, and sorry for the rambling! haha

Glad someone read it. I only know how well it works because I had to use it on myself. The first step to getting well (or helping someone else, which is more applicable in this case)is WANTING to get well. It seems like a "no-brainer", but it is often easier to remain in a known evil than to venture out and take a chance.

Angel Girl,
I am going to continue and tell of the last 2 Gates. Those are the Gates that reveal to us God's plan of salvation. With that knowlege, joy will come into your life. King David pleaded to God when he commited adultery with Bathsheeba to restor the JOY of his salvation to him. Joy can be restored.

Paxvox,
When I was at the first Gate, there were other people there that were debating as to whether or not to even look at the note on the Gate. They could not take the first step. What do you think can cause someone to take the first step?
Best regards,
Lou

PAX,
I agree. When I was told,"Blessed are the poor in spirit...." it was revealed to me that when a person knows that they are conscious of their hopelessness, that that is the time , for their poor spirit and their acknowlrdgement of it, causes them to take the first step. So," blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."

Phil,
That is an enlightening analogy that you just gave. I find that it is extreamly relevant to this discussion. I think that you must have a good understanding of what I have been talking about, for your analogy fits into many of the scenes on the Road. Paticulary at the Narrow Gate.

Pax

Are you saying that if I don't reach out to God then I don't want to get well???

What if I don't have the strength or enough faith to reach out???

What if I don't believe in God???

Does that mean I will never get well???
