Interesting link for the curious or undecided

Posted by medlib on May 29, 2002, at 22:57:04

Hi all--

Thought some of you might find BeliefNet useful or informative. It's a non-profit, completely non-judgemental site which offers info, discussion boards, links, articles, etc. on an impressive number of religions and belief systems. I use it as a reference for beliefs I know nothing about (most recently, Wicca and Jainism).

http://www.belief.net/index.html

There's an interesting quiz that helps you identify which belief/s most closely match your own. The questions themselves can be thought-provoking.

User Hint: Links from the Site Map take you to all the info available on specific beliefs. The Search box appears to link only to the relevant disscussion board and articles (poor web design, IMO).

Hope you enjoy---medlib

While there was *very* little on the religion I belong to, what there was, was nicely presented & totally unbiased which is very unusual. I do think this is a good site to learn more about other religion's beliefs alright. Wanted to check it out myself. Thanks, medlib.

I also liked the unbiased way they presented their info, and found the quizzes useful. Take care, Judy

Thanks for this. I have discovered today that I am an "active spiritual seeker," which is exactly what I'd have chosen to be, if I'd been given the list ahead of time. I am also a "serene seeker" and a "haroseth jew." Though the quizzes were fun, I like the information provided about other religions. What fun!

Here's what it says for Haroseth Jew: "Like this Passover fruit and nut mixture, your Jewish identity can take any number of forms, each blending tradition and innovation. Your cultural and ethnic ties to Judaism are stronger than your religious ones. Your religiosity and Jewish identity often revolve around holidays, lifecycle events, and other special religious times are important to you."

http://www.belief.net/story/32/story_3239_1.html#haroseth

Another thing, it's really Charoset, or Charoses, in the olden days, and it's my favorite food. It's made by chopping an apple or two, a cup of walnuts, some tablespoons of honey, and some sweet red wine. It is sooooooo delicious. (It's one reason Passover is my favorite holiday!) The site has a recipe for it, but theirs uses almonds. Walnuts go better with apples.

Anyway, I'm going to check out Lini's site now. I think it's fun.

I see myself as more of a spiritual dabbler if even that. I don't know where those extra points came from. They didn't have any "none of the above" choices. I kept looking for them.

perhaps you should contribute some on your religion to beliefnet? just a thought. I'm farily certain they're always looking for good writers of varying faiths, and would be sensitive to the fact that there's not much on your religion in particular. the site has added so much info since it started...

Wow, Mair, I could have written the above. I am an active spiritual seeker, too. Yea. We could dabble together, maybe? My beliefs lines up with the following faiths, first five anyway:

1. Neo-Pagan
2. New Age (??)
3. Unitarian Universalism
4. Mahayana Buddhism
5. Liberal Quakers

What were yours? The New Age thing I don't get, and the UU thing I do, they are pretty cool. And I am happy to be aligned with any Buddhist sect. The karmic thing is up my alley... And I have known and liked a lot of Quakers. So it was interesting to do that!

Beary had the link - the Belief-O-Matic (I know, insane name, eh?) test then takes your answers & aligns you with particular religious belief-systems based on those answers. I'm not saying that right. Did you find it yet? What were your top 5??

many kind thoughts,

W.

"I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker...

I get my lovin' on the run........"

Have you ever heard K.D. Lang's version of this song? If not, you really must... it's on her CD called "Drag," which only includes songs that refer (even if somewhat tangentially) to smoking... Kind of a Conceptual Work... But really nice...

spiritual & karmic bliss to you always,

This has to be wrong. That's all I'm sayin'.

Unitarian Universalism (100%)
Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (98%)
Liberal Quakers (96%)
Secular Humanism (80%)
Neo-Pagan (79%)
New Age (74%)

Here it is

Liberal Quakers 100%
Unitarian Universalism 99%
Mainline Liberal Christian Protestant 98%
Orthodox Quaker 82%
Neo Pagan 76%

followed closely by:

Secular humanism 75%
Reform Judaism 74%

I don't know what to make of this. I think it just means that I'm a Democrat. I have no idea what the difference is between Liberal Quakers and Orthodox Quakers. That I should score so high on these (and Unitarianism) is amusing since one of the VERY FEW things I like about the church I grew up in and have long since abandoned (Episcopal) is the liturgy, ceremony, and music - not real important items with the Quakers.
