Something good

Posted by Nadezda on August 15, 2008, at 14:05:35

Okay, I have reservations about going that far, but this last few weeks, I 've been stymied with soldering in my jewelry class. It's been extremely discouraging, with my doing it over and over again, and the two pieces just wouldn't join.

I was even working at home, for hours every day.

Then after Monday, after spending another few hours without success, I was really depressed about this, and about my always getting scared when soldering, and how I never learned how to learn things-- either I could do them right away, or not do them at all. I felt like it was almost hopeless.

The next day, I worked at it really hard, and I was really careful to pay attention to everything that was happening, and I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. And then I found a solution that worked-- and I kept on doing it and the soldering actually started working out--

So now I can really do it! I mean not that I won't have trouble with other soldering challenges-- but I feel as if I turned a corner, and am learning how to learn something, and surmount difficulties without giving up.

So I'm really kind of happy about that.

Nadezda, i am very impressed!

that is my next thing to learn and i hope that i can ask you questions when i get to it.

i have started making really teensy black and white photographs and i want to frame them with metal. i have to solder. i have the gun and don't have a clue about the rest. :-)

Hi, Fayeroe. The type of soldering I was doing was with a torch and silver solder--which uses a much higher heat, and is somewhat different-- but if there's any help I can give you that carries over-- I'd be more than happy to.

hi Nadezda,

Just wondering if I still remember what my teacher told me about soldering. was the trick to make sure your soldering surface was clean and your soldering surfaces hot enough?

hey, nfc.

Definitely-- sandpaper everything, make sure the relevant surfaces are making good contact, start with a lower flame, then keep the higher flame steady with the flame concentrated at the joint--

harder to do all of that at one time-- then you can possibly remember after you know how to do it, I'll bet.

hi again Nadezda,

after reading your post I remember a mistake I always made. I would forget about keeping the flame concentrated at the joint at that damn solder would just run off cuz the whole piece eventually became hot and u know the rest. ah them high skool days in shop class. memories. thanks! and post pics of your work too!
