Did you read the book? My son loved it. Well, we all did. His family life was similar in some respects to Edmund White's in "My Lives", although more chaotic.

I liked "Running with Scissors", too; as did my sister. Wow! What a story. I didn't care for his last book, "Possible Side Effects"; I just couldn't get into it.

Did you know that Augusten Burroughs is being sued by the real family he lived with?

[from Boston Globe]
> The suit alleges that even with the name change, the “Finches” were easily recognizable as the Turcottes. It also contends that Burroughs “fabricated events that never happened and manufactured conversations that never occurred” in order to “knowingly cause harm and humiliation to the Turcotte family.” The complaint also says Burroughs identified the Turcottes in media appearances, including an interview in People magazine, and that he presented them as “an unhygienic, foul, and mentally unstable cult engaged in bizarre and at times criminal activity.”
>
> Howard M. Cooper of Boston, the Turcotte family’s lawyer, said the prospect of the film, now in production, precipitated the complaint. “With the forthcoming movie,” he said, “the family is living in fear that there will be utter devastation to their reputations, and the invasion of their privacy will be complete.” The suit does not attempt to block the release of the movie from TriStar Pictures.

I *hope* he manufactured some of the events, in particular the divination (although that wasn't the strongest part of the book). Natalie(?) was OK, she had some very good lines. "Dry" wasn't as good either. This is a familiar trajectory, hey?

(Although I think "Dry" came first.) I think Burroughs should do more novels like "Scissors". No more of these 3-page slice-of-life observations.

I think the movie's coming out on October 20th. I'm anxious to see it.

It made me feel a little better about laughing about my own family. Is that terrible?

It helps to hear that it's not terrible because sometimes I just feel like an awful daughter.

“Running with Scissors” movie – anybody seen it?

The “Running With Scissors” movie is out now and it’s getting TERRIBLE reviews. “Two thumbs way way down” for it on the Ebert & Roeper show (sans Ebert). Has anybody seen it? I think I just might; I don't mind really really bad movies as long as I’m not expecting them to be good.

yeah, i read it and loved it! in fact, my sister started reading it over my shoulder so i left it at her house, never to be seen again. (oddly enough, she seemed to enjoy the poopie prophetic part. that's what got her hooked. go figure! and of course, she never finished it. don't even believe she started it.)

i'll check out the book you mentioned. i really want to get back into reading again. i need to spend less time on this blasted computer and more time reading.

i've somehow managed to downsize my tv time, but not the computer time. at least i'm doing crosswords again. darn it, i need some mental stimulation of some sort.

sorry i started a thread, never to be heard from again. i am rather flighty, you know. it's only one of my many charms :)

take care!

is it out on dvd yet anyway?

and jsut where have you been hiding old lady? (you're not fooling anyone, you know you're at least a thousand years old!)

i laugh at my family anyway. and i'm tempted many times to pull out the bible and see what it tells me when i face the choice of meatloaf or stir fry for dinner.

about examining poo: doesn't everyone do that? now, layign it out to dry is taking it to the extreme.

and i only wish my mother would have given me some good old valiums and whiskey to get me out of high school.

i ask, is this family really all that dysfunctional?

getting ready to watch the movie now!
