gotu kola + niacin + kava

Posted by linkadge on August 8, 2016, at 17:59:44

Working fairly well for mixed depression / anxiety.

I wanted to get off venlafaxine / remeron for a little while. Tapering to this combination was very seemless. Actually, I feel better.

The gotu kola / kava seem a bit more dopaminergic.

I'm glad to hear that you're finding the supplements that you're taking to be beneficial, Linkadge. I've found both niacin and kava to be helpful in some ways at different points in the past, but I think that I only took gotu kola once without noticing much from having taken it. What effects have you noticed that seem like they'd likely be due to the gotu kola that you're taking?

Gotu Kola seems to have some MAO activity - or at least some kind of dopaminergic activity. It seems to help anxiety and sensory issues (sensitivity to light / sound). There is some evidence that it can act as an antidepressant.

Thank you for your reply, Linkadge. What you wrote about gotu kola sounds interesting. I didn't know a whole lot about the herb, so it's good to know about some of the things that it might be able to do, both as far as possible mechanisms of action are concerned and as far as potential benefits are concerned.

I hope I can revive this thread, as I would be very interested in your longer-term experience.

- Niacin (not niacinamide) was one of the treatments I tried in the 60s & 70s; effective, but I couldn't stand the side-effects.

- Gotu-Kola was one of three antidepressant supplements recommended by my GP (very eclectic, alas now retired): couldn't detect any effect, but maybe my dose or duration was insufficient. The other 2 were Ginseng (worked) & "can't-remember"

- Kava; although usually considered as a tranquilizer, I have found this has a significant short-term A/D effect for me

This is the end of the thread.
