In praise of Orthomolecular...

Posted by Christ_empowered on September 17, 2013, at 0:44:22

Seriously. My vitamin line up costs maybe $100/month. I used to be state mental hospital material, now I'm bright eyed, I have energy, no TD or stiff gait, my skin's looking good, my hair grew back, and I'm down to 2 daily meds and low-dose PRN Neurontin (supposed to be a daily thing, but not usually necessary...).

I recommend it...to everyone! Give it a minute to work. By all means, take your meds with it. After a while, you might not need meds, or you may need fewer meds, lower doses of your meds, or you may be able to take something PRN.

I'm hoping to get to the point where I'm off meds. The truth about tranquilizers is that they don't really facilitate recovery; they just control agitation and psychosis and provide a bit of anxiety relief (unless you become MORE anxious from the dopamine blockade).

I've seen the absolute worst that psychiatry has to offer, and I must say that Orthomolecular provides a viable, humane alternative.

You used to always believe in benzos? What happened to change this? Phillipa

Benzos are pleasant, usually. But, in me, they cause depression and cognitive problems. Plus, they don't work against the significant, psychotic-level agitation I've experienced before. Long term use seems hit-or-miss with a lot of people.

Anyway, Orthomolecular has been an absolute godsend for me and for those who care about me. For about $100/month, I get relative stability, fewer meds, and no major medication side effects. Works quite nicely on a number of different health issues, too.

I did Orthomolecular myself, so this is the result of PubMed searches and trial-and-error. Seems to help....

1) 10 grams time release vitamin C (5grams 2x daily, AM and PM) 2) 4 grams niacinamide (2 grams 2x daily) 3) 4-6 grams taurine (2 doses, up when feeling agitated) 4) green tea extract (1-2 caps, life extension brand) 5) 400 micrograms selenium 6) 240mgs mixed tocotrienols w/vitamin e (tocomin suprabio brand) 7)50,000 IU beta carotene mixed carotenoids (jarrow) 8) 30mgs OptiZinc 9) 10mgs Astaxanthin (bioAstin) 9) time release b-100 complex 10) soy isoflavones (life extension brand) 11) grape seed extract (200mgs grape seed, 200mgs pomegranate extract...usually 2x daily)

That's about it...

Thanks for that -- I saw you already posted it in another thread on alternative, so apologies.

Some of that stuff sounds interesting. I don't tolerate most supplements well, but am a little concerned about my appearance lately.

I'm gonna put beta carotene, Astaxathin, selium and Vitamin E on the list.

>Astaxathin

That gave me insomnia even in the unit dose from LEF. As do goji berries if I eat a lot. Resveretrol lightened my sleep too. Curcumin (BCM) was OK, as was pomegranate and pycnogenol. Green tea extract seemed bad for sleep, but there were other things in that tablet, so I just drink a lot of tea in the mornings. Those other things were OK for sleep, Vit C and stuff.
