How much fish oil

Posted by sheilac on July 23, 2011, at 11:31:23

My MD suggests Omega-3 Fish Oil for his heart patients and my pdoc also likes fish oil.

I have mood swings, depression, severe anxiety, etc.

Currently, I take one 1400mg a day Omega-3 fatty acids - 900mg, EPA-647mg and DHA-253mg.

I am wondering if I should be taking at least 2 or more of these a day to help with symptoms.

Also - what does EPA and DHA help with? Anxiety? Depression? Mood swings?

Sorry for my ignorance. I am trying to add in more natural ways of helping my body.

Thanks!

Some people with bipolar disorder do well on high doses of fish oil, but in my experience, about 1 to 2 grams per day is sufficient for most people. Some people do better with a little more, like 3 or 4 grams per day, but I wouldn't recommend that much until you know how you react to fish oil. Does it improve your depression and anxiety or does it make you feel worse? In my experience, I can only tolerate a low dose of fish oil, about 1.5 grams per day. If I take more, my depression gets worse, so dosage is important when dealing with fish oil. You could try more, but if it makes your depression and energy worse, then back off a little. High doses of fish oil seem to be especially effective if you are manic all the time, but if you don't have manic depression, I would first try a low dosage of fish oil and see how it affects you. Around 2 grams per day (2,000mg) is probably a good dosage for most people, unless you are manic. Then more might be helpful. Good luck!

There is no way to know or predict. You have to start somewhere and try various doses to see what feels better, if any. If you get no benefit at any dose, it is still a good substance for the body so you could keep taking a minimum amount daily just for that. In terms of psychiatric improvement, you just have to experiment.
