Magnesium l-Threonate? Anyone tried it?

Posted by mogger on December 12, 2011, at 17:34:21

I just noticed this type of Magnesium and wonder if anyone has tried it and would like to share their experience? I had a positive reaction to Magnesium Glycinate for depression/anxiety at first but then it actually began to cause depression so I am wondering if this might work differently.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders, such as phobias and posttraumatic stress disorder, are among the most common mental disorders. Cognitive therapy helps in treating these disorders; however, many cases relapse or resist the therapy, which justifies the search for cognitive enhancers that might augment the efficacy of cognitive therapy. Studies suggest that enhancement of plasticity in certain brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and/or hippocampus might enhance the efficacy of cognitive therapy. We found that elevation of brain magnesium, by a novel magnesium compound [magnesium-l-threonate (MgT)], enhances synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus and learning and memory in rats. Here, we show that MgT treatment enhances retention of the extinction of fear memory, without enhancing, impairing, or erasing the original fear memory. We then explored the molecular basis of the effects of MgT treatment on fear memory and extinction. In intact animals, elevation of brain magnesium increased NMDA receptors (NMDARs) signaling, BDNF expression, density of presynaptic puncta, and synaptic plasticity in the PFC but, interestingly, not in the basolateral amygdala. In vitro, elevation of extracellular magnesium concentration increased synaptic NMDAR current and plasticity in the infralimbic PFC, but not in the lateral amygdala, suggesting a difference in their sensitivity to elevation of brain magnesium. The current study suggests that elevation of brain magnesium might be a novel approach for enhancing synaptic plasticity in a regional-specific manner leading to enhancing the efficacy of extinction without enhancing or impairing fear memory formation.

It's on my want-to-try-list but I'm waiting on a Human study expected to be ready in 2012:

I use it, It's the best form as far as absorbtion goes. I use it to potentiate my ADHD med, concerta and it works for that purpose. It may be working on my anxiety too. It's hard to say what individual vitimins I can give credit for my progress.

Since I responded favorably to Magnesium Taurate I thought I would give the Threonate a try. Frankly after only trying it for about 3 days, I am afraid to take it again.

I gave the Taurate 2 days to wash out, then started the (Neuromag brand) Magnesium L Threonate 1 capsule per day... I felt somewhat ill. The ill feeling stayed with me for the 3 days I took it. I stopped and I feel ok now.

I'm back on the Taurate, I notice I have great sleep being on the Mag. Taurate. If I take it during the day I get sleepy.
Any possible drug interactions with Mag. Taurate or Treonate as I am also on Savella..

I have the same brand Mag-Threonate and, after a few weeks, I am liking it. It doesn't seem to matter when I take it: it doesn't make me tired, though I tend to take it before bed. I haven't really noticed much other than a gradual improvement in mood, and other "serotonin"-type reactions such as waking up earlier. I didn't take it one day and the next day I felt very down. Don't know if it was a coincidence or not.

For the past 3 days I was really heading downhill and I couldn't figure out why. I kept going through my journals trying to connect the dots. Turns out my choice to drop my Magnesium Citrate was a bad idea. My mood started to become dark, dysphoric again. I took 400mg at midnight and there was a greater sense of calm, anxiety was vastly reduced, my poor cognition was improving, reading became easier, comprehension skills, information processing, and I felt some greater capacity for being able to enjoy something on a minor level.

The reason i stopped taking it before is because I thought it was numbing me out. Perhaps I was just taking too much of it or it was interacting with one of B6, Resveratrol, omega 3, licorice root, l-tyrosine, or ginkgo biloba. And of course it is said to boost ritalin. It may have just been coincidence though but most likely a bad interaction.

One thing is absolutelty certain. It destroys anxiety better for me than valium! It provides some sense of peace.

I'm a bit unfamiliar with seratonin effects as my memory is a bit fuzzy regarding those meds.

What kind of seratonin reactions did you have? Or anyone for that matter...

I think I noticed some numbing on magnesium taurate. Taking it before bedtime is almost a guarantee that I will fall sleep but seems to wear off after about 3-5hrs. It's effects do seem serotonergic. A fuzzy, swimmy calm
