Critique My (kinda) new vitamin plan

Posted by Christ_empowered on November 5, 2011, at 16:22:42

OK. I decided to cut some completely, cut others back, and bump up others. Here goes...

10 grams vitamin C
1600 IU natural vitamin E
200 micrograms selenium
30mgs zinc
100mgs soy extract (hair loss...sucks)
2 grams taurine (down from 6)
3 grams niacinamide
1 b-100, time-release (down from 2, instant release)
1 gram green tea extract (standardized to 70% polyphenols; down from 3 grams)

I feel good. I read that vitamin C helps everything, including boosting glutathione levels. That being the case, I got rid of the NAC and just ramped up the vitamin C. I'm considering alpha lipoic acid, but it makes my stomach hurt. No more melatonin, not even just as-needed; makes me feel weird the next day.

I think a resveratrol/curcumin combo would be better for hair loss than soy isoflavones.

I would be curous to see what would happen if you just took 1000 mg of vitamin C, and 200 i.u. of vitamin E. Are you getting the mixed tocopherols? If not, you are probably going to do some damage. You may do damage down the road just taking such a high amount. Do you really think these doses are making a difference in the way you feel?

Which supps did you cut out?

Ever though about doing a little lithium orotate once or twice a day?

How are you doing in general right now? Hope you are well CE.

If it works well for you, stick with it as long as it doesn't present any problems for you. The one critique I have is to be careful with vitamin E. There was a study done, and it found that people taking real high doses of vitamin E actually had a higher mortality rate. It just might be a correlation and maybe it isn't statistically significant. I don't know for sure. For myself, I can only tolerate 600IU of natural vitamin E, which seems to be a safe dosage. Vitamin E is supposed to be good for the heart, but some sources say that it doesn't lower the risk of heart disease. It's hard to know who is telling the truth anymore. I just go by what I can tolerate. It's amazing that you can tolerate that much vitamin C. I can only tolerate 500mg of vitamin C per day. I like the buffered calcium ascorbate form. What form of vitamin C do you take? Does it bother your digestive system? I thing alpha lipoic acid is overrated. I think most people don't need such an unusual supplement if you are taking the more common antioxidants, like vitamin C, E, and selenium, which you are. I never liked alpha lipoic acid anyway. As for melatonin, I take 1mg every night. Can't say that it does anything beneficial. It might be another overrated supplement with little efficacy in the long run. In the short-term, it does help with sleep, but the effect wears off over time, at least that's what happened to me. I keep taking it at night because my body is used to it, and it doesn't seem to hurt me in any way. Glad that your regimen is helping you!!

hey. Thanks for the input.

I'm also taking Propecia for hair loss. I think a lot of my hair loss was related to nutrient deficiencies, which is probably why its started young and was diffuse, as opposed to your more typical hair line recession and/or bald spot. Propecia+taurine+green tea+zinc is the basis of some loreal pill for hair loss available in Europe. I ripped them off, and it seems to work, at least with the Propecia on baord.

I'm just trying to boost my immune system and ward off tardive dyskinesia. I got the vitamin E dosage from some studies treating TD. Some used lower doses, but there were some studies that used higher doses and they seemed to get good results. Also, I only get 50 micrograms selenium in each 400IU natural form vitamin E capsule, so taking 4 helps me get 200 micrograms selenium.

My hair is looking much, much better and the texture is greatly improved, so that's good. The hair loss is no longer bad; the hair line still kinda sucks (if you google "Norwood Scale," I'm a 2), but whatever--I've seen far worse.

I lost scary amont of hair on wellbutrin but stayed on it because it helped me so much. NAC is what has super glued my hair to my head. It's 6-8 months after starting it and I'm still gaining new growth and loosing next to none.

that's awesome, torrid. I've heard that some vitamins and minerals can reduce hair loss from meds. I seem to recall hearing that selenium was good for depakote induced hair loss, for instance.

Anyway, how's your hair now? Acceptable? I hated my hair loss. It started thinning rapidly on high dose adderall and then after I quit the adderall I shed even more. Took years to fix, since I had the early onset male hair loss to contend with on top of the drug induced stuff.

Again, I'm really happy your hair loss is no longer a problem.

My hair is great now, I'm still gaining new growth and have some short sections at my temples. It was down to my butt but to even out the new growth it's to my shoulders now.

I have no personal experience with it, but from the perspective of one who cares for horses that need to have beautiful full hair, the vitamins in their supplements include:

MSM
Biotin
Methionine
Copper
Zinc
Manganese
Vit E
Vit A
Vit D
Paprika
Kelp
Chia Seed
Fish Oil

Helps overall health and wellness too, they get garlic and a few other herbs thrown in as well. Not sure if that will help you at all, but these are also key nutrients that should help you too...I've taken all at various times, if you had to pick one, Biotin is really supposed to be a hair growth miracle.
