Calcium supplements and insomnia

Posted by Lao Tzu on April 15, 2009, at 6:05:04

If you are bipolar or schizophrenic, please be careful with calcium supplements. They tend to help my depression when taken with other vitamins. However, they also tend to cause persistent insomnia in myself. I usually take only 300mg per day because I cannot tolerate anymore than this, but over an extended period of time even 300mg of calcium carbonate causes restless nights, and then I have to resort to Benadryl to help me sleep. I really don't see the benefit to one's depression if calcium is also going to cause insomnia because even one night of zero sleep makes you feel like crap. You really have to be careful of all the supplements you take because many do cause insomnia, and you might not realize it right away. Also, I've had insomnia issues when taking Vitamin C before bed, so it is probably a good idea to take Vitamin C early in the day.

Hello, that's a really good point. If I take calcium at night, I have trouble sleeping. I have to take lots of it though, because my bones are weak (osteopenia) and I'm not even 40 yet!

You too? I thought I read that you did a lot of bicycling--does that help? Do you have nice bicycle trails by you? I have to admit that when I am depressed or busy, first things that go are exercise and nutrition. I have GOT to turn that around, as I have gotten in trouble this month by ignoring both.

It's a priority in my life. Hence the late posting tonight as was riding at eight pm even before eating and mowed the lawn and tired to get mildew off the house with a broom and water. Love Phillipa it's my anti anxiety med and I guess anti depressant although do take low doses of both. Just started bioidentical natural hormone creams prescribed based on my hormone levels which were virtually zero.
