5-HTP $20 @ Walgreens! Where get tryptophan?

Posted by Fivefires on October 3, 2007, at 17:13:02

I've never tried it, but want to; tryptophan I mean, not necessarily 5-HTP.

Can any1 who 'is having' or 'has had' a good experience w/ tryptophan, point me towards a good alternative buy site or a brand name?

tks, 5f

There's just not enough energy on this board these days, it seems... sorry for the late reply. I only check here a couple of times a week anymore (not that I'm a prolific poster anyway...).

Anyway. I'm having success with the Doctor's Best brand of tryptophan. I buy it from www.iherb.com. Normally not a big fan of Doctor's Best, but it's doing the trick. I use the powder form so I can calibrate my doses more carefully. 500mg (the most common capsule dose) is too much for me. Even when I take it before bed, I have a sort of fuzzy hangover the next day. ~225mg (1/8 teaspoon) has been just about right.

Anyway, good luck... let me know if you've got any more questions about my experience with this stuff.

Tks circus boy.

Ya' know, I think I'm confused about tryptophan. I had thought it would be an energy supplement, but I may have this backwards. Is it instead more likely to relax a person?

Tks so much for response. It's not that I don't need relaxing as well. I just got to thinkin' of the whole turkey and tryptophan v. the stimulant (can't think of alternative term at this moment) in things such as chicken, I believe.

Maybe u could set me straight here.

tks again, 5f

I had wondered why there was a supposed difference in turkey v. chicken, and have suspected as much.

Guess I'll no longer need be wary, when hitting that midday slump at work as always did, in chosing a turkey v. chicken sandwich 4 lunch.

My fatigue problem is furthered by pain medications.

I'm getting a little confused re: fatigue v. relaxation.

I'm on Provigil but having some self-questioning re: dependence.

No, l-tryptophan probably isn't going to help with energy... L-tyrosine, maybe, but not l-tryptophan.

Tryptophan is converted to serotonin and then to melatonin (the sleepy one) once you consume it. I've heard that more of the tryptophan converts all the way to melatonin if you take it at night, but that's when I take it and it still feels plenty serotonergic.

Tyrosine goes to dopamine and norepinephrine. It's worth a try (I like the Jarrow Formulas brand), but even if you take it over the long term you'll probably want to take breaks... it makes me really irritable after a week or so! Now I only take tyrosine very occasionally.

I'll probably have to take tryptophan breaks, too, but I'm pretty new to the stuff (been taking it for less than a month).

Anyway, good luck! To both of us, I guess.

I use the same stuff, you get a LOT and the price is good. It's worked VERY well a few times (nothing I've ever taken has worked everytime or even remotely regularly). Lately it makes me spacey. I think the heat of the car got to it.

That's the term I was trying to think of all this time - l-tyrosine!

Think I may need dopamine though.(?) I have Soma for sleep, but since beginning Provigil, tire more easily in eve and am able to fall asleep w/o anything.

Yeah.

Okay.

Does it happen to work in any way similar to Armour thyroid? I've given the prior some thought as well. My fatigue is simply overwhelming and interfering w/ my NADLs.

Okay. Learning this w/ Provigil as well.

I see.

This whole 'break idea' is a very good one. Takes a little planning, but worth it I think.

Tks much circusboy!

I've recently spoken w/ some people who use it for it's 'calming or anti-anxiety' properties.

It's opposite, tyrosine, is something I'm looking into, which is supposed to be helpful for hypothyroidism.

I wouldn't call tyrosine the opposite of tryptophan. One is the precursor of serotonin the other dopamine.

Also Check into selenium for thyroid function. It is supposed to be very important.

Haven't noticed anything really, but have only taken maybe 4days now.

Do you find the Tryptophan helps you with depression? I'm trying to stay of antidepressants and thought from some of the things I've read that the Tryptophan would help the depression because it supposedly raises serotonin levels in the brain???

Adrenal Fatigue, Kidney issues maybe.

Did you post a response somewhere with your symptoms? What's going on with you. I saw another post about fatigue.

I've probably tried over 100 supplements, maybe I can help. What are your symptoms. What have you researched. If you don't want to post publicly (lots of others here can help also) feel free to babblemail me.

I take 6 grams of tryptophan a night. I have a prescription for it.

Hair falling out? Use zinc and selenium and it will help. :)

This new supplement I have has zinc and selenium.
