Dr. Bob is deletes many of my posts

Posted by drboblies on September 19, 2002, at 13:08:34

I have made several posts that Dr. Bob has just flat-out deleted. He claims to not like doing that, but given the number of posts of mine that he has deleted, I find that hard to believe.

Is he a bit of a control-freak here? I am not calling him names or breaching civility. Rather, I think the "civility" line was crossed in his flat-out censorship of my contributions in direct opposition to his stated beliefs and policy without explanation.

When you're blocked, you're not supposed to post. Last time, I increased the duration of your block to 2 weeks, so now I'm increasing it to 4 weeks.

I'm sorry, but I remit my aggreement with Dr. Bob et. al.. It seems to me that Dr. Bob is too heavy handed here, and I find nothing uncivil about DrBobLies' post. Also, I do not wish to subscribe to Yahoo to remain anonymous.

I will make this perfectly clear. Doctor Bob has not won my confidence, and by redirecting me to a site that I must subscribe to, does NOT keep me anonymous. This is clearly an indication of the level of competence that Dr. Bob is working at. Furthermore, Dr. Bob is influencing behaviors of the clients, and demands that posts be made in their correct boards when it is clearly Dr. Bob's responsibility to organize his data, not the clients'.

Remittance of my agreement has been sent to Dr. Bob.

I do not wish to remain anonymous! Let it be known that there are people who are very upset with the current practices of the medical community, and that I, Lenton K. Goforth, am one of them. If you wish to contact me, please do so.

Dr. Bob, I think you have no clue of what a scientific study is because this study is totally out of control. And, furthermore, any control that you exercise here, jeopardizes your study becuase you are influencing your subscribers, and inciting people to anger. In fact, the above message can, and is considered by me, a display of anger.

You are unjustified for extending the banning! The post by mr DrBobislying, is civil, and very orderly. You have just indemnified yourself in my eyes, I will not participate in your experiment, which I believe is funded by a federal grant. You have broken the law, of the government that supplies your funding. Charges will be sent to my congressman!

These boards aren't public per se... they are Dr Bobs boards and he puts them here for OUR use.

"These boards aren't public per se... they are Dr Bobs boards and he puts them here for OUR use".

I disagree. Please read the agreement you signed. You are merely subjects in this experiment, which I believe and will get confirmation of, is funded by federal grant money. In other words, funded by your tax dollars. If this is the case, then these boards are PUBLIC. However, I doubt very much that if these boards prove to be effective, the result will be a private board, where you will have to pay to enter. You are not being paid for helping them expand thier 'services'. You are paying them (with your tax dollars) so that they can make more money in the future. They offer nothing in return (read your agreement carefully).

I smell a rat! I trust my nostrils! The methodology is undisclosed. The hypothesis remains hidden. The boards are over moderated. This project is more than likely funded by your tax dollars in the form of a federal grant. You recieve nothing from Dr. Bob and this Chicago Institute. There are other avenues for you to seek support from on the Net which are entirely free, where you are not required to sign an agreement which grants this Chicago hospital the rights to use your written posts to justify setting up a business on the internet. These boards are not for you, it is for this chicago institute, and this is clearly stated in the agreement you signed. I have already disagreed to further use of my posts, because it is evident to me that posts are being deleted, and these posts will not play any role in determining the efficiency rate of these boards (in other words, the data is being manipulated).

If indeed this board is being funded by private moneys, then these boards are not public. But I lay ten to one odds now that this capitalist instution has not ventured their assets into this experiment.

In plain and simple words, the Chicago instution is looking for new ways to expand their business, and offering none of THEIR services. YOU ARE BEING HAD, and agree to giving up your copyrights to this company that seeks to prove that this is a valid way to help people with pyscological disorders, so that this Chicago institution can PROFIT financially from it. Whether or not you benefit from YOUR FRIENDS' posts on this board, you are giving this institution rights to use your posts to come to the conclusion they want to: This is a valid way to provide services to you, and a valid way to charge you for these services in the future.

Change is inevitable. Growth is optional. Power to the people, not the greedy capitalists that are already betraying you (but you agreed to let them do this to you). READ YOUR AGREEMENT AGAIN! I suggest you retract your agreement, and find a truly free source of support.

I like these boards as they are and have been (nm)

I have recieved an awful lot of help, uspport and love from these boards, and also agree with Dr Bobs style of moderating.

I am also happy to be part of his "experiment". My tax dollars do not go to this as I live in the UK.

People like you may be ruining this board and causing alot of upset to the people here, which is I believe is alot more wrong that what DR Bob is doing.

Nikki,

You can have no idea how wrong what Bob is doing without knowing what he is deleting. You say you get a lot of help from this board; maybe Bob deleted a message that would have really helped you. You don't know. I don't know. Only Bob knows, and I'm not sure anybody trusts him enough (or should) given his heavy-handed record.

I'm here on the board a fair amount, and I would know if Dr. Bob does a lot of deleting. And he just doesn't. It is very seldom that posts get deleted at all, and they are on threads that have gotten out of hand and he feels that leaving them up would be disruptive. I remember twice having posts of mine deleted and both times, there was nothing wrong with my post, but it was in the middle of a thread that had gotten out of control. I doubt that anyone's ability to receive support was compromised by those deletes. The only other posts I know of that are deleted are duplicate posts, where someone hits submit two (or more) times, or where they post something on more than one board.

If you do in fact know of Dr. Bob deleting everyday posts, I'd love to see evidence of it, since that has not been my experience on my year on the board.

Anxiousgrrl,

I'm one of those people who spends more time here than I'd like to admit. I suspect that there are a lot of people like me. There are periods of time in which I read the board, then keep hitting refresh in the hopes that there is something new to see. If there isn't anything new I've been known to read the old stuff again. There is no way that large numbers of posts could have been deleted without me seeing many of them first and then noticing their absence. I know of almost no posts that have been deleted - certainly not for content. You'll notice this thread with it's accusations is still here. Also, interestingly, I've never heard any long term poster - one who's name I recognize from their participation on this board over time on subjects other than complaints about the board - say that they've seen posts being deleted either. Some of them spend as much time here as I do and if none of us have seen it it's probably not happening. It's one of the things I like about this particular site.

Jane

PS Just before hitting submit on this post my telephone rang. When I came back an hour later I saw all the new posts on this thread but not mine. Even though I know that posts aren't deleted it took me a while to puzzle out that my post was still there on my computer in another window with the submit key unpressed. It's possible to get confused.

Pick your battles

The energy and enthusiasm you're expending to defend the freedom of speech of yourself or other posters would be useful and gratifying if aimed at purposeful causes - like government misspending, abortion, the death penalty, nuclear arms, pollution, the bombing of Iraq, etc.
To attack the creator of a website for imposing rules on that website which prevent the posters
from becoming a cyber "mob" is unproductive. Insisting on civility keeps the board from disintegrating into the kind of unhosted chat-room
ruled by profane mouth-breathers. I've been posting on PB for years and know that a definite attraction to the site is its atmosphere of understanding and support; that others have experienced your own trials and have insight. Criticizing and demeaning another posters
detracts from this feeling of acceptance and threatens the quality of the site. If one poster is allowed to get away with extreme rudeness, other posters with follow, and many other posters
will-in a good-natured way-follow with a flurry of their own posts, attempting to put out brush-fires. The end result is implosion.

I feel strongly about this because of a personal experience. A couple of years ago, a poster on PB lamented about the experiences of a certain judge in New York who was sentenced to a prison term for stalking a wealthy socialite who had dumped him after a torrid affair. I was familiar with the case and had read the book written by this judge on his experience. I found the book to be self-serving and this judge to be unremorseful for the terror he had inflicted on his mistress and her children, and uncaring about the pain and shame that his wife had endured. I thought the guy was a jerk, and I said so.
Somehow the advocate - who was posting so strongly for this judge on PB - discovered my e-mail address and started sending me letters that
I interpreted as threatning. I don't remember the exact language, but he talked about it being "my time" to face the "real judge", and how I would pay for my misgivings.

The upshot of this ordeal is that one can never know if any poster still has a spinning wheel, but the hamster is dead.

PB was created by Dr. Bob from hard work and creativity, for reasons that I'm still not sure of.In our society, it's difficult to imagine a person operating purely for reasons of scientific
knowledge, even harder to imagine a person working only for the good of mankind. We're bombarded with images like the philandering Jim and his disgusting wife Tammy Faye, a symbol of our generation shot down in flames.
Still, it's unhealthy and unreasonable to look for plots and Communists and suppression in the monitering of a website. You should be rushing off to a pyschiatrist instead of a lawyer. Pick your battles and get a life.

But still I need to remind you not to post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down. "Pick your battles" by itself would've been enough, wouldn't it have?
