To Linadge....

I was thinking, you could possibly tell your GP you have severe restless leg syndrome, and he/she likely will prescribe a small dose of a dopamine agonist, like pramipexole, ropinirole, or rotigotine. Since Wellbutrin works for you, this may be another direct angle to remove anhedonia, and get more dopamine stimulation. (Plus no norepinephrine stimulation.) They take a bit to get used of, but can really lift the anhedonia. (Bromocriptine does this for me.)

No need to say sorry.

Sometimes (unfortunately) things need to be bent a bit in order to get results. I've thought about that angle, but I think my doctor would chalk it up to ADHD.

Interestingly physical restlessness (during the day and night) is a core symptom of mine. Venlafaxine and SSRIs make it worse. TCAs are neutral. Really, only methylphenidate improves this (and my sleep in general).

I wanted to consolidate my meds in the summer (as I was taking 4) but in the process I switched off ritalin + effexor and on to wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin does help some aspects of ADHD but it also leaves me feeling cognitively foggy (something ritalin does not do). Also, in my reading, wellbutrin really isn't dopaminergic! I think this is a bit of a misconception. You probably get the same dopamine transporter occupancy on 5mg of ritalin than you would on 450mg of wellbutrin. So who knows what its mechanism is, but it's questionable that dopamine has anything to do with it.

The core problems I am having right now are:
- feeling numb all day
- nightmares at night
- some anxiety (in the form of fast heartbeat, or just an overall preoccupation with my heart)
- unable to start anything, but it all just feels purposeless

Hi Linkadge:

I TOTALLY get that you don't control the script pad. It does sound like you may need a bit more of a serotonin boost, though, as serotonin suppresses nightmares. Plus, I think you need propanalol..which is *excellent* at slowing heartbeat and akathisia. Can you ask for this? (Propranolol) I'd imagine your Pdoc would not have a problem with it.

As for the serotonin angle....have you thought about tryptophan? It is also available as prescription, and does work. Same with 5HTP. (I have seen a few studies where they combine an maoi-b with 5HTP, with amazing results.) I am preparing to go that route myself.

See, serotonin doesn't just 'numb' you, but in particular with tryptophan, increases feelings of being social, and improves self-esteem. You don't need a script for this stuff.

Anyhow...let me know what you think!

Tryptophan improves my sleep, but makes my concentration and mood worse the next day. I do use it, but sparingly.

How about tryptophan with choline, and/or tyrosine? (In combination?) And GABA?

I hope you don't mind me asking if you have already answered in the past? Choline can both be energizing and relaxing...just too much is depressing.

Just another quick thing I posted above Linkadge, and someone hammered this home to me and maybe think about. That is, the idea of ambition, and that we have to keep up with everyone else in our career, or romantic life, etc. I call that, well, a bit of bullcrap. There is no rulebook that say's we gotta do this or that. We are just *here*, in the moment. That is how the Zen Buddhists look at it...wherever you go, there you are.

Are your feet cozy and comfy on a cold day outside? Your sitting around, relaxing, reading a bit? There is no LAW, or anything, that say's, instructs, we have to 'measure up'...blah blah. We are here, BECAUSE we are here...like the Rush song Roll The Bones. (Sorry, don't know if you like them..lol) Just enjoy today, when you get that chance to chill, get a little high...no need to compare...ambition is society created...and it is SO backwards quite often!!

Okay, sorry for the lecture...just thought you could use a different perspective. Just tell me to shut-up...lol.

Have a good day/eve...

Jay

Actually, GABA does help me. It seems to help with GI issues, sleep. If I take it too many nights in a row, there is some depression, however.

Interestingly, GABA supplementation can significantly increase gut butyrate production. Butyrate (like valproate) is an HDAC inhibitor with mood stabilizing properties. Although GABA doesn't pass the BBB too well, butyrate does. Gaba is also helpful for my cardiac anxiety. GABA circulates peripherally and can slow heart rate and blood pressure.

Hmmm...interesting. A GABA analogue, pregabalin, helps me in a similar way. I too am having severe problems with drive and motivation. I am now combining a higher dose of carbamazapine and 225mg's of venlafaxine. I am lucky that my pdoc is keeping me on clonazapam. I *don't* know if this is going to cause major akathisia or/and profuse sweating and anxiety. I hope the carbamazapine offsets that, as it seems to have in the past.

Like you, I have an on/off relationship with venlafaxine. All's we can do is try, right? IF it doesn't work out, I may go with moclobemide. The thing is, moclobemide doesn't do much for my anxiety, and in fact, boots it up a notch, just like Effexor. The only thing is, moclobemide doesn't have as much of the "cheese" effect as the traditional MAOI's.

So....I wish us both luck... :)
