Penny for your thoughts..

Posted by jay2112 on September 22, 2022, at 10:40:48

OK...I mentioned I started my new job and really enjoy it. But, why are people looking/acting towards me like I am almost a non-existent loser? I mean, it's mostly guys, and I feel kinda like a real 'outsider'...and I have that 'imposter syndrome'. Maybe I don't "look" the role? I am a big, chubby guy who everyone always seems to think I am a cop/security! And, I LOVE just being happy and kind, and the guys come off as tough and kinda mean. (Not to me, really). Maybe I should grow a beard? I look quite tough in one of those. I am a very deep "empath" type, and I read people very easily. I dunno. HELP!!!..lol... P.S. I told my boss about my Asperger's in an email yesterday, and explained that my high/awkward social anxiety prevents me from "showing my best side"...because I don't know if they think I am a moron..lol

A beard might not be a bad idea. Maybe start talking about Canadian football at work? Show an avid interest in hunting? Get some tattoos?

On a more serious note, I used to feel miserably self-conscious. Since I did neurofeedback over ten years ago, I've felt a lot less self-conscious.

I stopped telling diagnoses to anyone. I just describe my problem in words everyone understands.

a woman who had lived in poverty her whole life once told me: "some people do not work."

that was well over 10 years ago. I do not work. I cannot work, but...the end result is the same, isn't it? and...

it isn't just credentials or the ability to do the actual -job- itself. lots and lots of things go into working, and I am one of those people who do not work.

Thanks Hugh....and thanks for the clip...that was hilarious! I think it's just my hyperanxiety. I am starting to settle in a bit more. I HAVE taken note of the neurofeedback, and am trying to find somewhere it is covered by our insurance.

Thanks again...
Jay :)

I see your point, but I selectively, if I do feel the other person has the depth to be caring enough, will take a chance with my Dx. I (sadly) don't mention being bipolar, because there is a boatload of stigma too. And, bipolar has been so madly misconstrued in television and everywhere, people just have wild, sad prejudice.

So, so true...and I hope I didn't sound ableist. I am still on a government disability pension. I have been greatly helped by a community worker with the Canadian Mental Health Association. I mean *greatly* helped! He taught about all of us being in *recovery*, and recovery principles. (Just google it.) See...I am lucky to be well enough to work...but I (hope) I don't gloat in it. I am doing it like all of us try to do...to get some more loot..money. It took me YEARS to get to this point, though. Plus, I am a client, and teaching recovery is in line with my social work background. So, say, I just REALLY got lucky. I get to help people like myself, with mental illness, as well as people with addictions. And, they pay me for it, which as long as I just got my pension, I really wouldn't care about. Plus, I got my foot into this job thanks to a very nice friend in the field whom I worked for over 30 years ago.

Working is not, and SHOULD not be *everything*...or even MOST..EVER! I like the idea of all citizens getting a basic income...working or not. There is a good book, too, called "Laziness Doesn't Exist", which I am going to track down a copy of...because it sounds PERFECT! I am still on a government disability pension, and may continue to be. There is absolutely *no* shame in that!! Ever....

Did disclosing your diagnosis work out?
