Low dose aspirin for depression or BPDepression?

Posted by PeterMartin on August 28, 2022, at 9:46:23

Does any take low dose aspirin in their medicine cocktail and thinks it might be helpful?

There are some studies on the subject including this 2019 meta-analysis that found it did reduce the risk of depression/bipolar depression:

Clinical Role of Aspirin in Mood Disorders: A Systematic Review

Abstract
Worldwide, depression and bipolar disorder affect a large and growing number of people. However, current pharmacotherapy options remain limited. Despite adequate treatment, many patients continue to have subsyndromal symptoms, which predict relapse in bipolar illness and often result in functional impairments. Aspirin, a common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has purported beneficial effects on mood symptoms, showing protective effects against depression in early cohort studies. This systematic review thus aimed to investigate the role of aspirin in mood disorders. Using the keywords (aspirin or acetylsalicy* or asa) and (mood or depress* or bipolar or mania or suicid*), a comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO, Clinical Trials Register of the Cochrane Collaboration Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group (CCDANTR), Clinicaltrials.gov and Google Scholar databases found 13,952 papers published in English between 1 January 1988 and 1 May 2019. A total of six clinical studies were reviewed. There were two randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials and populations drawn from two main cohort studies (i.e., the Geelong Osteoporosis Study and the Osteoarthritis Initiative study). Using a random-effects model, the pooled hazard ratio of the three cohort studies was 0.624 (95% confidence interval: 0.0503 to 1.198, p = 0.033), supporting a reduced risk of depression with aspirin exposure. Overall, the dropout rates were low, and aspirin appears to be well-tolerated with minimal risk of affective switch. In terms of methodological quality, most studies had a generally low risk of bias. Low-dose aspirin (80 to 100 mg/day) is safe, well-tolerated and potentially efficacious for improving depressive symptoms in both unipolar and bipolar depression. Due to its ability to modulate neuroinflammation and central nervous system processes, aspirin may also have valuable neuroprotective and pro-cognitive effects that deserve further exploration. Further randomized, controlled trials involving the adjunctive use of aspirin should be encouraged to confirm its therapeutic benefits.

Only high dose aspirin, NSAID's work for me. They reduce inflammation, making me feel a heck of a lot better. There are risks, though. Maybe a steroid, like taking some form of testosterone, which is powerful and greatly reduces swelling, and improves sleep.

I don't take aspirin (as there are some rare side effects with longer term use) but I do take ginger root and / or turmeric (both of which are pretty potent anti-inflammatories. Ginger also has some MAO-A / 5-ht1a effects. It is a mild calcium channel blocker and a strong anti-oxidant / neuroprotectant.

Thx for the reply.

I eat a ton of ginger chews (got into them when I needed something to curb nausea from Rybelsus when starting). Probably does help.

Turmeric has always been on my list of things to try, but being on Marplan and it having MAOi properties I've figured it was a bit risky.

Ginger is an awesome serotonin blocker, especially in the stomach. That is why it is so good for nausea, and works good to counter the side effects of serotonin medications.

You can't go beyond 100% MAO inhibition, so theoretically, there is no particular risk.

Hmm. I thought it was possible to get serotonin syndrome from combinations of MAOIs. I was under the impression that MAOIs were typically not combined for this reason.

Serotonin syndrome or not, I'd also be weary about mania.

Does turmeric help your mood?

It is possible that some MAOIs have serotonergic activity beyond MAO inhibition. For example, the amphetaminergic action of tranylcypromine (Parnate) might cause the release of some serotonin.

However, as I said, you can't go beyond 100% MAO inhibition, so combining two (pure) MAOIs should have no effect beyond a larger dose of only one of them.

not to go all hippy-ish on y'all, but...

I added Pycnogenol, which turns out to be a somewhat potent anti-inflammatory...

and it helped. especially when I added in astaxanthin, also something of an anti-inflammatory.

Grape seed extract may very well do as well or better than Pycnogenol, for less $$$ and more antioxidant power per capsule (depending on brand, etc.).

I think most antioxidants have anti-inflammatory effects, at sufficient doses. even humble ole vitamin c, but it would probably require grams upon grams.

just a thought. :-)

Turmeric is much stronger as an anti-inflammatory than it is as an MAOI. You'd several grams of it to get above single digit inhibition.

Also, its probably better for digestive inflammation, as it isn't well absorbed for a systemic effect.

I suppose the question is do you want 100% MAO inhibition? I.e. does the risk of serotonin syndrome increase as one approaches 100% inhibition? Also, is it more likely to reach 100% inhibition with two separate molecules binding to MAO?
