Generic lamotrigine - Is Teva any good?

Posted by SLS on August 21, 2022, at 19:07:16

Hi.

Has anyone tried the Teva lamotrigine XR?

I have been taking GSK Lamictal brand of lamotrigine for years. I don't know if my prescription plan will renew it this year.

Which generic brand of lamotrigine have you found to be best?

Of all the lamotrigine products I've tried, the original Teva product came closest to matching Lamictal in its therapeutic effect. Actually, I think it was equally effective. The original Teva lamotrigine was hexagonal, pink, and porous. Unfortunately, Teva bought out Allergan. Allergan had been manufacturing their own version of lamotrigine. Since they didn't need two factories, they decided to use Allergan's, which had been producing a product called lamotrigine XR - an extended-release version.

Which lamotrigine product did you find to be most effective?

always generic. never noticed a big difference from fill to fill. I think they went from teva to...cipla? maybe?

its so...strange. after a disastrous hospital stay nearly 15 years ago, the shrink -insisted- on brand risperdal, but not the minty, melt in your mouth kind they had in hospital (let down!). apparently, very important for maintaining proper blood levels, blah blah blah.

so...i ask current prescriber about lamictal xr. 'nah, that's for neurologists..." which is a perfectly valid response, just...

especially with the potential ill effects of not maintaining proper blood levels with anticonvulsants (but apparently brand atypicals are a must?), I didn't quite...get it.

sorry to ramble. i find that the 2x daily with any given generic from my big box, chain drugstore @ 300/day is...? less agitation, low mood less frequent and less severe.

The Teva generic XR is actually just relabeled Activas, and tbh it's one of the worst for me. It's the only "brand" of Lamotrigine in any form that makes me space out completely an hour or two after taking it. That may just mean it's strong or metabolizes different than others but imho it's an outlier generic and def not made at the same place w the sam ingredients/formula as the pre-2019 Teva IR.

The two generics that seem passable for me are Unichem and Taro. At the moment I'm on a run w Unichem and doing ok. I have an issue w changing genetic and tweaking dosages/when I take pills. So that likely isn't helping. I'm going to give Unichem a full month+ at 250 after a period of switching anytime I felt a bad mood swing.

I did order brand Glaxo from Canada for a bit but California passed a law making almost all prescriptions electronic only. My doc wouldn't ever willingly help me get a prescription to Canada but he used to give me paper scripts and say "do whatever, I just don't want to know about it".

saw you drug store . Com (put all together) was a legit Ca pharmacy I used at least 4/5 times and they were always very helpful (easy to contact someone on phone/email).

Marks marine pharmacy is one that is vouched for in an Ozempic group I'm in on FB.

But yea, for IR generic best is likely Taro/Unichem. XR seem a little more consistent - Dr. Reddy seemed ok along w Trupharma. The ODT (Oral disentagrating tabs) seemed to work pretty well (strong) but they were pricey and I never tried a full week+ on them. The brand I had (still have a few left) is Par.....

Here's a fun read through - gives you an idea how varied the responses are: https://www.drugs.com/answers/brand-lamotrigine-side-affects-teva-worked-best-3442522.html
