behavioral care in Canada

Posted by porkpiehat on June 23, 2022, at 13:02:14

Hi all:

Wondering what anyone could say about the mental health system in Canada? I know the access to care is better than the US but does the efficacy suffer and is it (hopefully) less fragmented? I'm a dual citizen in the US and thinking of moving.

I'm stuck between coming off my meds for intensive therapy and keeping my income (self-employed). Can't do both and my insurance won't cover the suggested long term hospitalization or leave.

Cheers and thanks everyone.

Good day fellow Canuck..

Things have changed massively around behavioural care since Covid. Most provinces now cover behavioural AND medical mental health care. I am not 100 percent sure about particular details, though. It is all, though, 100 percent universal and free for all Canadians.

When in doubt....just google it, eh! :)

Best,
Jay

I worry less about the availablity and more about the quality of mental health care on the gov't dime.

At least where I am in the US, I can get services on medicaid fairly easily but it's typically providers just out of school that will take state insurance.

The new trend in all areas of health care seems to be the good providers are less likely to take insurance and more likely to take direct payment from the 1 percent.

For people such as myself with complicated Dx's, the proper care is out of reach. I was told I needed to be admitted to Austin Riggs to really help my attachment and personality disorders, plus complex PTSD, but that I would never be able to afford it. Rich families send their problem kids there. And there are enough rich families these days to attract the top performers.

I need to come off my meds completely and be in intensive therapy which for a self-employed person, would bankrupt me.

Now that I have citizenship papers, I am hoping that moving to Canada would allow me to finally address my issues without landing on the streets.

I feel a little like a carpetbagger taking this approach but I've been committing slow suicide for years and I need a way out.

Not to mention grad school would be affordable and when my head is screwed back on to some degree I can get a new profession as mine is worsening my condition.

Cheers

Well, yes, I couldn't agree more about the quality of care. But, there are some pretty amazing agencies providing some of the top research on the world here. University of B.C., Center for Addictions and Mental Health, U of Toronto, etc.

Now, you will have to search, but I did it, and lucked upon an MSW therapist who specializes in grief and bereavement issues. I was able to get the province of Ontario to pay, but it was through university Ontario Student Assistance Program. If you have your residence papers, you should be able to access any education funding, which includes therapy funding. BUT, you of course have to be, well, taking at least a course! lol. I am classified as having a disability, so tuition, therapy, completely free.

But, I would also highly recommend the Canadian Mental Health Association (Not to be confused with the above cAmh..lol) Again, if you do the leg work, they will assist you in finding the best therapists going, and you most likely won't have to pay for it. I have a community BSW CMHA worker who I check in with twice a month, and we have emerg plans set up for hospitalization, suicide intervention. No charge...
