Seroquel, Zyprexa and intense exercise

Posted by Lamdage22 on May 9, 2022, at 13:06:32

I am having a hard time following my 3 days a week strength training regimen for several weeks. I also try to get more daily steps. I easily feel strung out. Ontop of that, I cant sleep for about 6 hours after a strength workout. Are Seroquel and Zyprexa very bad for exercise performance? All I have seen are studies that call for further studies. They say it may be a problem.

I have to add that from 2012 to 2019, I spent ALOT of time horizontally. So probably during that time my body detrained like crazy. Luckily the trend is towards spending more time vertically.

Anyone know anything about that?

From personal experience, I'd have to say 'yes' that Zyprexa and Seroquel, as well as (in my case) Risperdal, make exercise feel like you are gonna die...just from sheer exhaustion. Even, just today, I took some extra Risperdal last night, and this morning just walking to the bus stop felt like I was carrying 50 pounds in groceries! My legs, literally, felt like they were going to give way! Just yesterday, and the previous week, I was just bouncing nice through the mall.

I suspect it is the dopamine blockade, especially at high doses of these meds. I remember my days on high dose Zyprexa, with occasional high dose Seroquel, I could barely walk around the block!

Anyhow...just my thoughts.

Jay

Were you exercising shortly before you were put on Neuroleptics? What I mean is, are you sure it was caused by them? I don't feel like I'm gonna die... I'm just exhausted sometimes. What helps is doing 2 sets of the exercises instead of 3. That is better than doing nothing at all. That seems like a good solution to me when I'm slightly strung out but still want to do some work.

I guess its a good sign that it bothers me that I can't do as much as I'd like to. It means I feel a genuine drive to do things. Hopefully the ability will follow. If theres a will there is a way. I have read more on the internet and it seems that the effect of neuroleptics on exercise performance varies greatly in different individuals, as does general tolerability. There are people who build solid strength on them. Luckily, I don't have any "robot/zombie like" feelings and considering the dose I take, I am not that tired either.

Well, I am quite outta shape as it is, and remember, I am 52..lol. Strength and resistance training sound like they are working well for you. I was ZOMBIFIED on the antipsychotics. Seroquel turned me into a deeply angry, depressed man. Once in awhile is OK for me, but rarely never, every night. Zyprexa nearly killed me with high blood sugar readings, and made my OCD 100x worse. I was craving milkshakes when I woke up for breakfast.

So, ya, it is likely an individual thing. But, for me, anyways, constant heavy dopamine blockade is a real, well, downer. IMHO...YMMV..etc...

i've been on zyprexa for 12 years now. I'm getting off it, switching to latuda, zyprexa when i frist started it, it caused calmness, and stabization. I rerember feeling, drifting, but i have noticed it has caused blunting, it caused me to not care about important things, and now, i've had enough of it, but the thing is, it seems to be the only thing to take during an emergency drug during stressful times. When i first was given zypreza during a manic phase, the trickster was jumping into people, that he's a spirit, and he can move into other people, seeing the same facial expressions, that creepy grin i rerember, but i rushed to a psych, they put me on zyprexa, all of it disappeared. But over time it caused lower motivation, and acutally now when i take 20mg, it has no effect like it did 12 years ago. I don't think the trickster is possessing people, everywhere i went, my parents, my therapist, going out into public - seeing him in every person i talked with. It was horrible phase, but now i know what to do, if people are following me, i just know it, i know what to do, ignore it - and not go into a psychotic break. But zyprexa does not make me stablizated like it did 12 years ago, it just makes me slow, unable to do certain tasks.

So - yes, zprexa does slow you down, and makes weight gain, and increases cholesterol. And yes fatigue. Anyways that what i think about zyprexa and seroquel, serouel i could not function, but many people take it. Those are thoughts about it

For sure it slows you down, that is the whole purpose I guess. What I mean is, other than slowing your mind, does it slow strength or endurance gains. And could very intense exercise be contraindicated with Seroquel and Zyprexa. Having been a couch potato for a long time, I wouldnt push myself to a pulse way above 160. That is just common sense.
