Is there an end?

Posted by linkadge on January 3, 2022, at 17:33:41

So, I wanted to be optimistic about the ability of science to solve the COVID problem. Yet, with the latest strain, I am (on occasion) finding myself flirting with the possibility that science cannot actually solve the problem. I.e. continual variants, continual shutdowns etc.

Basically, I feel that (after 2 years) we're really nowhere (although I acknowledge that this feeling may be exaggerated or incorrect).

I realize that this may or may not be the case. I'm just trying to realistically establish some basis of hope. I'd like to believe the experts, but the the track record is getting hazier.

I'm not so much worried about health (on a personal level) but more for a potential loss of way of life.

Sorry,

I feel the same way and many others that I know. People in real life don't talk about it. But go to facebook and post a thread about this and the reponses are so numerous. I don't trust the vaccines after what happened with the J&J where I trusted. Not doing it again. Show me real science first. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

It's not that I don't trust the vaccine. I do. Again, I think the vaccine is save and effective .... just not that effective against Omicron spread. It is reducing deaths. I do recommend getting it. Also, the risk of blood clots with J&J is very low.

I'm not saying that I am against the vaccine, it's just that clearly it's not enough and when variants (resistant to current vaccines) can just pop the f*ck up willy nilly then we're really not getting anywhere.

Pestilence took 6 years. I think it is going to be mostly over some day. We got better technology and hygiene.

Perhaps. We haven't eradicated the seasonal flu. Perhaps COVID becomes just a nastier version of the seasonal flu that just keeps flooding the hospitals year over year.

Should we hope that is what will happen? Not getting vaccines are the time though. Don't get flu shots. Seems everywhere on my facebook friends , friend of friends and neighbors and their friends all have it? Wasn't like this last year? Phillipa

Link the vaccines seemed to work for the original Covid less for Delta the first variant as long as booster. But now since they don't work against the Omricon. Back to the drawing board it seems. No J&J as no longer recommended here in the States. It's Pfizer or Moderna. Looking at the fact that Pfizer is the one being used on little kids. I tend to think this one might be safer. Of course seems like this changes daily. After the 16th of the month I will most likely booster vaccinate. Phillipa

They may have to try to predict mutations like they do with the flu. I have never had a flu, not to my knowledge. And I wasn't ever careful.

You've probably had it. Colds and flu can be hard to distinguish for some individuals.

The medications have to be initiated early to be effective. This can be difficult.

Yeah. This from today's NYT. Shouldn't be a paywall. Let me know if there is and you want a repost. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/01/06/world/omicron-covid-vaccine-tests/former-biden-advisers-call-on-the-administration-to-change-its-covid-strategy

PS, the vaccines are a great benefit from science, and I feel incredibly fortunate to recieve them, boosters and all. Whether they are like a flu shot or a vaccine as some pedantics argue, side-effects and all, they are saving lives and decreasing the severity of illness, thus, hopefully, attenuating long-covid side effects.

I agree. The data on death reduction is pretty impressive at this point.

Feel they work even in older people. Preference for Pfizer or Moderna? Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

That data shows that they do work to significantly reduce the risk of death and hospitalization. This would be especially true for the elderly, among whom a disproportionate number of deaths have occurred.

Deaths from COVID as a percentage of the unvaccinated are roughly 6 times higher than the deaths as a percentage of vaccinated. This is a conclusion not just of the United States and Canada, but many other countries as well.

If you haven't been vaccinated, I would urge you to take a valium (if you're anxious) and go get it done.

Thanks Link. Yes talked via patient portal with my endocrinologist today. There are new variant specific meds (don't know if IM or nasal as they would like) Pfizer is said to be hoping for release to public in March of this year. But he said since there is no guarantee to get which ever I can either Pfizer or Moderna booster. Which would be your choice? Leaning toward Pfizer since their booster dose is the same as the first two vaccines and they are deemed safe for little kids? Wearing N95 masks if either a store or other. thanks Phillipa

To be honest, my second dose was Moderna and it was a rough 24 hours. I would do it again, in a heartbeat, if needed. That being said, I would probably opt for a Pfizer booster myself.

It's likely not going to prevent you from catching Omicron, but statistically it will significantly reduce your risk of hospitalization and death.

My next-door neighbor (unvaccinated) died over the Christmas holidays from COVID. He had risk factors and was taking very few precautions. It's sad. I do believe he'd still be here today if he was vaccinated.

Link so then with the J&J last March you would get a dose of Pfizer vaccine then? I still don't get how on dose of a different type can protect. Isn't any protection from the J&J absolutely gone now? Phillipa
