The best drug is 'don't need any drugs', right?

Posted by Lamdage22 on June 10, 2021, at 20:20:13

So I seem to feel better mood wise without antidepressants. I have reduced my antidepressants considerably and am looking to eliminate them completely. I can't explain how I am feeling better, not even in my native language. Less altered is the best I can do.

This might be the result of psychotherapy and/or supplements. Something has changed. When I tried to reduce in the past, I failed.

Just putting that out there. It once seemed impossible to come off. Now it seems very possible, even advisable.

It has been 5 weeks on the reduced dosage.

awesome. obviously, i fall into the "well, if you need it, take it" school of thought. having said that...

antidepressants don't seem to be the greatest option, long term, for a lot of people. with multiple psych drugs on board, it becomes more difficult to properly assess benefits vs risks or even "is this stuff doing -anything- ?," at least in my experience. and yet...

doctors hand them out like candy. where i go, you frown too much, get some flavor ssri prescription. true story.

as for supplements...honestly, going Linus Pauling on my vitamin c intake (15-20 grams per day, currently) has been the best move, ever. I don't know if I'll be all full of vim and vigor into my 90s or whatever, but...

my mood is vastly improved, my allergies are much better, even my skin is doing better.

glad you posted.

Antidepressants kind of put my mind on a railway. There was only one direction possible. Feelings were muted. For a while they were helpful. Now it seems it is not necessary anymore.

SRI type antidepressants that is. And it wasn't just the bad feelings that were muted. I didn't have too many good feelings at the time, so I didn't notice it much. Now I do though.

There is a phenomenon known as discontinuation rebound improvement. This happens sometimes when you abruptly discontinue or reduce the dosage of some antidepressants. I have had this happen with imipramine and Nardil in particular. I also had it with protriptyline and T3 throid. For me, the improvement lasted for a day or two.

I hope it is not transient. My improvement has lasted for 10 days now. Mood is the same, but I enjoy being less altered. I am going 25->12.5 Trazodone soon. I got permission.

I always looked at your med list and said how can he function on those levels of meds. I know everyone is different but the combinations and dosages seemed excessive, in my opinion. Good luck with reducing them. My theory has always been the lowest dose but with the right meds is the best formula, but the combination is the most difficult to figure out.

Well it depends on what you call functioning. Occupationally, I don't.

I guess the level of functioning one has, whether they work or not, is one way I can gauge if the meds I am taking allow me to do the activities of daily life (ADL). Those include your hygiene, nutrition, buying and cooking food, paying your bills, staying on top of doctor appts, etc. Everyone has different standards but those of us with severe depression know when our capabilities are failing and when we are not coming out of a bad place for a long time.
So functioning as a person even if unemployed should have a basic level of adherence to certain routines that are daily requirements to live at a basic level. At least that is how I can judge my functioning and what my doctor wants to know, else she cant treat me for what I tell her I able able to do well or not at all.
