How do you treat your Nardil weight gain?

Posted by SLS on May 11, 2021, at 12:15:36

How do you treat your Nardil weight gain?

I haven't experimented with anything. What do you currently take to treat weight gain? How would you describe your success with it?

Do you eat more with Nardil, or is there a metabolic component to it? What's your best guess?

Thanks for any input.

I'm just using charlatanry successfully. And Metformin.

2g/d metformin makes me less hungry.

Hi, Sigi.

> 2g/d metformin makes me less hungry.

Are you currently taking Nardil?

Someone mentioned another drug higher on the board, but I don't remember.

No, I've never really taken it, except for a few tablets once.

Semaglutide (Rybelsus)?

It's mentioned here:

Yeah wording it like that takes away the ammunition of doubters :) Yeah, Emojis and an edit function would be swell. But I think Dr-Bob doesn't want that. I have contacted the admins about it.

"Its all in your head" isn't really an argument. It doesn't matter if it works.

If Dr. Bob is anything like me, his current Perl programming/scripting skills may not be at the same (peak?) level as they were when he developed this site. I learned useful Python programming skills not long ago, and now most of that is gone!

Moreover, his memory of the technical implementation specifics of the site may no longer be fresh. I've been in the web development business, and I know that I tended to forget things about sites I had written long ago. I also know that implementing a site like this is by no means trivial.

That said, Dr. Bob may not have the cognitive dysfunctions I do.

A site like this is actually an admirable achievement. Perhaps even more so because Dr. Bob is a doctor and not a professional programmer.

A Mediterranean diet might help.

He wants something pharmaceutical I think. Peter Martin thinks he has found the solution with Rybelsus. Check out his thread. However my Dr says NovoCare are crooks. And the potential side effects are not exactly mild. Metformin doesn't work for you?

Ah. Metformin is not the worst medication in the world. I don't know about the others.

Yeah, I would feel safer on Metformin than Rybelsus. With metformin you need to check kidney function every once in a while so you don't get metabolic acidosis. It is rare but serious, if it happens. Then it lowers Testosterone a bit which is not so good if your levels were low to begin with. In that case it might make them so low that you are going to have mood issues because of low T.

It is not a perfect medication by any means. But it is better than many others.

Just trying to help people find the best med now. If they are going to go "meds only", maybe at least I can help to find the best one.

In return, I appreciate if people accept my approach and help me find the best solution.

Trying to convert is of no use. I get that now.

I know I've mentioned it, and at the moment it's difficult to get a doc to approve for non-diabetic purposes, but Semaglutide (specifically the new pill version Rybelsus) is a game changer.

I've lost 17lbs in 2months and have never been able to lose psych meds weight aside from w my first time on Topamax (not worth the side effects).

Nardil is def a weight gainer. There was one study I found that showed it did affect metabolism in a minor way, so even if you eat the same calories as someone else you'll gain slightly each month....

I'm probably going to ask if anyone has done (or might consider doing) a trial of Nardil + Rybelsus in the MAOI subreddit (https://old.reddit.com/r/MAOIs). I know many people have sought a solution for Nardil at gain, and some have liberal docs willing to try things like Metformin etc. I might reconsider Nardil down the road if Rybelsus could allow for weight -loss- (or proper bmi) on it.

Def good glp-1 agonists though on google scholar or pubmed. Nothing like them for weight loss imho....

Sorry hadn't seen my previous thread mentioned.

I personally think Metformin and the Glp-1 (glucose like protein) meds are beneficial overall. Really have to do your own research though. There are a lot is studies on both and both have cardio and neuroprotective abilities. Weight gain on the other hand is a health risk....

Metformin helped keep my most recent trial of Nardil (2yr) essentially weight neutral. I gained ~10bs over those 2yrs but that was likely just poor diet and getting older. It didn't help me lose weight though (it can be great for some on that regard).

Both Metformin and GLP-1 meds may end up having benefits of their own for anxiety/depression. Both are being looked at...

Best of luck.

Topiramate sounds pretty nasty although I am sure it is ok for some. Im going to spare me the trial.

Why do you think Nardil is a weight gainer? Because Parnate is not as far as I know. Is it the increased GABA levels due to Gaba-T inhibition?

Probably the GABA effect of phenelzine (Nardil). Also, tranylcypromine (Parnate) has an amphetamine-like stimulant effect. Phenelzine and isocarboxazid (Marplan) would be a fairer comparison.

Ok, but if Zyprexa is a 100, I'd rate Nardil as a 50 or 40. So yeah, it was extremely hard, but I did lose weight on Nardil without aid by any substances. For a while I was pretty shredded despite Nardil. But mileage may vary.
