Faster heartbeat during cross-taper: Dangerous?

Posted by Lamdage22 on May 24, 2021, at 7:16:14

Im kind of cross tapering from serotonergic antidepressant to 5-HTP. Sometimes my heartbeat is a little bit faster and soewhat more pounding. Is this a huge problem? Because if I dont supplement mini doses of 5-HTP, I sometimes get depressed. Im at 19mg Venlafaxine and 25mg Trazodone as we speak.

ok. obviously, I am -not- any sort of expert, so...there's that.

couple things...antidepressants are known to boost neuroleptic blood levels. i actually skimmed over a brief review of antidepressants in schizophrenia. the authors noted, on the one hand, that some studies failed to show a benefit. then, they brought up the increased blood levels of neuroleptics, and came to the conclusion that the antidepressants are worthwhile in schizophrenia. psychiatry...don't get it.

so, what I'm thinking is that you're not only tapering the antidepressants; you're also altering your tranquilizer blood levels. the 5-htp...to me, as a supplements fan, might actually be a less toxic, possibly even beneficial, approach to managing mood.

but I'm not an expert. effexor discontinuation, in particular, is notoriously difficult for people. that, by itself, could cause some discontinuation symptoms.

is it dangerous? again: not an expert. since you live in one of those genuinely civilized nations that has made healthcare available for everyone, perhaps you should talk to a doctor (maybe not a psychiatrist?) about what's going on in your situation. just a thought. :-)

It max be easier to withdraw if you replace it with 5-HTP and I only was on 37.5mg. Yeah probably will talk to someone tomorrow. 5-htp feels amazing. Clean. Not a feelings-killer. Never tried it on its own, but I am optimistic. I do think that in order for it to work, there must be adequate levels of several other nutrients.

Pyridoxal 5 phosphate?

For example, yes. But others, too. I just have to make it through this withdrawal period. Of course I don't know if it will turn out to be a good decision, but I am optimistic. Another reason why I want to do this is that I think there were things to be desired in terms of Serotonin. I couldn't take very high doses of Venlafaxine and Trazodone. At higher dosages, Venlafaxine would take the fun out of sex and Trazodone would make me anxious. My hope is that 5-HTP will have no such restrictions and thus I can get a decent dose that will make me feel good. I think anorgasmia is much less common with 5-HTP than with any reuptake inhibitors, although Trazodone is an exception.

5-HTP seems to be working

It has been 16 days on reduced antidepressants. Currently 25mg Trazodone and 18.x mg Venlafaxine. I feel different for sure, but not worse. I feel more like myself and less altered. I am still careful with the 5-HTP dosage. The heart racing has stopped though.

There are some symptoms as a result of the body adjusting to the new situation. But most of the time mood is pretty decent under the circumstances. Those symtoms last for less than a day, usually maybe 2-3 hours. And they are not as severe, so it is tolerable.

My impression is that I could not do this without the 5-HTP. I am a wuss when it comes to tolerating disturbing mental health symptoms. When I hear what other people tolerate, I am in awe.
