Venlafaxine vs. Duloxetine more stimulating?

Posted by linkadge on September 22, 2019, at 16:11:14

For those who have taken both venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) which did you find more stimulating? Did one cause more insomnia than the other?

Only briefly did I take Cymbalta. I found Effexor to be more stimulating. Insomnia? I think Effexor as well. Have you taken Cymbalta before?

going above 60 with cymbalta=stimulating. for me, it was a good thing, except for that wired but apathetic feeling. blah. effexor was less apathy-inducing. honestly, Tofranil-PM was better than either, and its a night time deal. just sayin'.

Hi.

I found Effexor to be more stimulating than Cymbalta. I never experienced insomnia with Effexor, although I hear that some do - especially when the dosage is too high. If you experience insomnia immediately upon starting Effexor, it might be worth continuing with it to see if it is only a startup side effect.

I have not taken Cymbalta. I was possibly considering as being more noradrenergic than Effexor (at least on paper).

Duloxetine didn't have any effect on me. I take Venlafaxine with partial success.

This would have nothing to do with this... but it's the only AD besides trintellix to create nausea that I need to treat.

Cymbalta horrifyingly stimulating and insomnia-causing. Stimulants, like Dexedrine, can put me to sleep. Cymbalta, for me, was just, horrible. Effexor, which I have been on for years, apparently touches on the opioid system, and is a bit more serotogenic. But, even the more noradrenic, desvenlafaxine, Pristiq, works well for me. Maybe even better than Effexor. Are you thinking of switching to Cymbalta? Have you tried Pristiq?

I found Cymbalta to be more stimulating than Effexor. Neither caused insomnia.

One stategy is to adjust serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitions independently of each other.

Eg. titrate sertraline (or escitalopram, etc.) to find the most suitable dose. Do the same with reboxetine (or atomoxetine or nortriptyline).

Warning, the -oxetines may cause depersonalisation. It is known that atomoxetine is a kappa-opioid agonist. However, that may be true of reboxetine as well, because several people, including myself, have experienced depersonalisation from the use of this drug. In my case, this symptom did not reverse upon cessation of reboxetine. I still suffer from it more than 15 years later. Thus, your safest bet is nortriptyline, but this drug has other side effects (eg. antihistamine) and it is less noradrenaline-selective.
