Low dose Wellbutrin in Schizophrenia

Posted by Lamdage22 on September 5, 2019, at 22:50:44

Hey guys,

I wonder if this is safe. I could sure use a boost. Does the literature suggest Wellbutrin induced psychosis is pretty rare?

Thanks

Because buprion is a reuptake inhibor but i think prevents the relase of some of it. I may not even know what im talking about, but i rerember reading that in an article long time

Wellbutrin also acts on nicotine receptors (blocks them). This can reduce dopamine release. But, I remember reading that certain doses reduce dopamine release and others increase it.

hi. the (very little) literature I've read on the subject--mostly using wellbutrin to curb smoking in those with Schizophrenia, stable on neuroleptics--shows very little in the way of drug induced psychosis, agitation, etc. and, on a personal note...

I'm not really 110% sure of my official label/diagnosis, but i was prescribed up to 400mgs/daily (the SR version...200 x 2) without major problems. Towards the end of treatment, I started getting kinda jittery, like...too much coffee jittery, not crazy insane jittery...so I dropped it. I slept late for a couple days, kinda pensive...no big deal. discontinuation was fairly uneventful, thank goodness.

are stimulants available/widely used where you live? even here--The United States of Adderall-prescribing uppers to those with psychotic disorders is frowned upon, but it does happen...I think its usually Ritalin or Provigil. Just asking, because...I think Ritalin would have fewer drug-drug interactions, plus you'd know fairly quickly if it was good, bad, or just...not worth it. I don't know about Provigil...I think it has some drug-drug interactions, but it has been used in clozapine-treated Schizophrenia people, with some good results.

hope this helps.

Hey empowered...

On paper Ritalin and Wellbutrin appear to be interchangeable, but studies seem to suggest that Wellbutrin does possess more antidepressant effect.

I've never taken it, so I can't really say, but some of the nicotinergic receptor modulation might be involved. Also Wellbutrin has some pretty potent anti-inflammatory effects (which might benefit schizophrenia) but Ritalin doesn't.

I'm possibly looking at trying a Wellbutrin + lithium or a Wellbutrin mirtazapine combination. But, I can't really have no idea how well it might work for me as an antidepressant.

hi. i think for most people, wellbutrin is probably a better idea than Ritalin. I agree that it has more antidepressant effects. having said that...

lamdage is on a couple things already, at high doses. i was just thinking that ritalin would work quickly and have fewer drug-drug interactions, plus maybe rapidly reduce sedation from the neuroleptics. or...not. im obviously just throwing out ideas.

id personally opt for wellbutrin+mirtazapine over lithium+anything or...anything involving lithium, really. i've known of (distantly acquainted) some lithium casualties, and...no, no thank you.

lexapro+wellbutrin seems to be kind of popular, as these sorts of combinations go. i don't know your history...do the ssri drugs help at all, or...not so much?

ok. i like your replies...you and sls are awesome about keeping up with research and such.

Lithium isn't for everybody and it does have side effects. However, the kidney risk supposedly isn't as high as once thought. If it occurs, it can usually be caught with monitoring. There are distinct benefits however. It is one of the few meds with a proven anti-suicidal effect. Also, over time, it tends to normalize cognition, grey matter, telomere length and some other risk factors associated with bipolar (i.e. heart disease).

I can't tolerate much more than 300mg, but it has helped me at times when other meds don't. The problem is that it often puts me into a semi-apathetic state.

I agree with you that, if cognition was a bigger concern then a stimulant would be preferable to Wellbutrin. I don't think the evidence for Wellbutrin and ADHD is as strong as with Ritalin.

SSRIS were no good with the exception of Sertraline. But bad akathisia with it.
