New generic Sertraline = I am a mess. What the FU?

Posted by Nomadd on August 31, 2019, at 17:25:37

So I've been taking a low dose of Sertraline, 25mg, generic produced by "Aurobindo". So far so good. No problems with that. Now I've got a new prescription, 25mg, also Sertraline, also generic, but from another manufacturer (Heumann). I've been taking it for five days and I've been a mess for the last two days: extremely agitated, nervous, tired and listless, lots of derealization and disorientation...

I don't get why this is happening. Shouldn't they work equally? 25mg is 25mg.... not sure what's happening to me, but I suspect that it's due too the switch... the aforementioned symptoms (?) / side effects (?) coincide with the switch. Pure coincidence? Not sure!

In the past I hadn't had any problems with switching / changing generics... (not antidepressants, but other medications)

Highly likely that's the problem. I've had lots of issues w generics lately. To the point that I call pharmacies and ask which generic they carry, and make sure they don't switch it.

If I were you I'd call around and ask other pharmacies "Can you tell me which generic manufacturer of "Sertraline" 25mg tables you guys carry? Hopefully another pharmacy that is close will carry Aurobindo (or maybe something other than Neumann). You could also call your current pharmacy and tell them you think you're having a reaction to the "filler and binders" in this brand and you would like to switch back or try another. Eat brand uses slightly different inactive ingredients. Pharmacies will understand that. The reality is some of these generic companies (90%+ are in India now) have very poor quality control.

But yea do whatever it takes to get back on Aurobindo or perhaps another generic. I'd google with "Aurobindo" "Generic Sertraline" + "post" or "forum" (using the quotes makes google only return results w those words). You'll prob find forums have discussed bad generics for Sertraline.

Since it's not controlled if you have any refills you should be able to get it early. If your doc is generally understanding let them know.

Insurance might not cover the med early but just use the GoodRX app/page to get a big discount. I doubt it's very costly.

It's the *inactive* ingredients (and the manufacturing process) that can vary. They supposedly shouldn't matter, but in some cases it can make or break the medication. The classic example is when Nardil was reformulated.

I wonder if you could go back to the previous generic to see if the symptom abate.

It's already getting better, but man... the first few days very brutal... O_o

Let's see how it continues. My doc is currently not available (vacation).

This new generic seems to release its main psychoactive compound more evenly / steadily....

With the Aurobindo generic I had a massive "push" roughly 3 hours after intake, but with the new Heumann generic it's more evenly distributed & balanced over a time-span of 24 hours...

Not sure if it does make any sense....
