Luvox - here we go again

Posted by plenair on August 22, 2019, at 23:57:36

So, I restarted Luvox 12 days ago at the lowest dose - 25mg. Almost immediately, my urine stream has gotten very weak and my tinnitus is worse. Is there hope that this is transient and will pass? I'm taking Luvox for anxiety/ocd rumination type issues.

Thanks.

Thanks. I tried Luvox last fall for a little over a month and got the same effects which also began immediately got worse as I increased the dose from 25mg up to 100mg. It didn't help my OCD/anxiety in that trial.

I posted a thread earlier about how I am sensitive to many medications. I've been trying medications for about 7 years (on and off) with no relief and lot of side effects.

I'm glad it's helping you...maybe these sides will wear off...

Hi,

Other SSRIs I tried:

- Citalopram for six months at 60mg - no help, but it did lead to weight gain, erectile dysfunction and headaches.

- Prozoc - 5mg for five days. I didn't give this a fair shot, but I had such an anxious feeling like I was jumping out of my skin that I stopped.

- Luvox (round 1) - 25mg-100mg - for one month. No help but led to pronounced difficulty urinating and high tinnitus.

I've tried many other medications, but have stayed away from other classes as well.

My doctor had no problem with my trying Luvox. Was it hard for you to get it?

Why did you decide to switch off Luvox the first time and go to lexapro?
How are you liking Luvox now...does it help rumination/intrusive thoughts? How about physical anxiety?

Understood. I would be curious to know your feelings about Luvox and how it has helped you.

well i take a higher dose of the 250 extended release...along with 2mg of rexulti as an adjunct...definitelyy helps with getting stuck on ruminating, over thinking and worry and depression....only my opinion but i think a patient with severe ocd needs a higher dose ....can go up to 300....

I'm going slow with Luvox this time (second time around). I raised it last Friday to 50mg after a month at 25mg. So far, no horrible side effects yet. Perhaps some small amount of urinary difficulty and increased tinnitus but it could be normal variation.

Unfortunately, there has been no help for relief of rumination/ocd thoughts and anxiety. It sucks that I may not know if it will work for some time. I did a trial of citalopram in 2013 - building up to 60mg and took this for about 5 months or so with no releif either, so I'm concerned that Luvox won't work.

However, the Genesight test says that of all the SSRIs, four of the six have impaired efficacy in my system. The two that should "work" are Luvox and Prozac--so, we'll see.

Thanks very much. I'll hope to check in as the time goes by. I think I noticed the bad effects more at 75mg and definitely at 100mg so the next titration should be an indicator. I imagine my doctor will want me to first hold at 50mg for a month or so this time.

Currently on 75mg Luvox. I'm not noticing any benefit for GAD/OCD, but it is a low dose and I am tolerating it.

I understand Luvox needs to be taken split dose in doses higher than 100mg. Should it be exactly 12 hours apart?

JoeF - You said you take 250mg Luvox - how are you splitting the dose between am and pm?

On fluvoxamine now up to 100mg. No help for GAD/OCD yet. However, I'm now getting a stinging and burning in my chest that I first thought was also anxiety (as I've had this before and have consulted with a cardiologist for it in the past) but I think that this could be heartburn and acid reflux perhaps being caused by the fluvoxamine. I also notice more flatulence.

Do others get this with SSRIs? Is there a possibility that this will subside as I adjust to the medication?

Are you familiar with the APA algorithm for the treatment of OCD. There are lots of drugs to try.

Hi,

Thanks for your message. No. I'm not familiar with the APA algorithm. I will need to look that up.

I'm currently on Luvox 175mg instant release (100mg at night, 75mg in the morning). If it's doing anything, it may be slightly helping physical anxiety, but it's not helping the rumination. I'm hoping that if I get into the 200mg, it will help.

Prozac had no effect on my OCD. Neither did Lexapro. Luvox helped some at a 300 mg dose-I never had too split it.

The APA clearly states in their algorithm that SSRIs be the first line of defense against OCD and that an augmenting strategy of adding an atypical antipsychotic be added if their is not enough response. What antipsychotic are you taking? The two antipsychotics with the best data for treaating OCD are Risperidone and Abilify.

Thanks for your message.

If you took Luvox at 300mg and did not split the dose between evening and morning - did you take the Instant Release or Extended Release? I am taking generic fluvoxamine maleate which is instant release. The patient information sheet says that after the evening dose reaches 100mg, the doses should be split evenly between day/evening when possible.

Regarding antipsychotics, I have been offered Risperidal in the past, but have not taken it. Now, my doctor wants to see how I am as I build up to 300mg before trying anything else.

I just went up to 200mg (100mg am/ 100 mg pm) today.

What are you currently taking to manage your OCD?

I'm taking Trintellix and I augment with Zyprexa, Acamprosate and Zonegran.

I never split my doses on the Luvox and I took the instant release formulation. The extended release version, CR is kind of a joke...

How is your regimen working for you? I have not heard of Acamprosate and Zonegran before. Are you able to tell how they help you?

I'm pretty systematic with my medications. I started with lithium and was on that for many years before I added Zyprexa, which calmed me down and helped me sleep. Then I added Trintellix for depression and started seeing positive effects after about a month. Acamprosate was then added for anxiety which it did attenuate. I added the Zonegran mainly for the OCD, as the trintellix and acamprosate haven't had an effect on it so far. Zonegran is also for nerve pain. While taking these meds I'm on the look out for side effects, which I'm glad to say there haven't been any except a slight increase in anxiety with the Trintellix. I take one symptom at a time, basically.
