Nardil or Parnate?

Posted by Radish on June 5, 2019, at 17:21:01

I wonder whether I should ask to go on Nardil or Parnate. Given my symptoms what would you suggest?

Severe social phobia/avoidant personality disorder
Very low self esteem, passivity, self-loathing
Alternating dysthymia and major depression and all the fun symptoms that come packaged with them
Cognitive impairment: Bad verbal fluency and word recall, ability to process and think and speak, blank mind, bad memory. Im completely stupefied.
Body dysmorphia
Intrusive thoughts of self harm

I always thought nardil would be the way to go because the SP is the worst and most depressing symptom I have. But its so tied to my cognitive processing issues, which is probably tied to my crushing lifelong depression, so maybe parnate is better for me because Ive read parnate kicks in faster and can give you energy, whereas nardil can mentally slow some people down.

Hopefully Ill start one of these in a month and a half. My pdoc has been giving me the run-around for 6 months, so well see...

Thanks babblers

Radish

It depends on what makes you suffer more. SA or Cognitive problems? I guess the latter could get worse with Nardil

For social anxiety Nardil is amazing. The biggest problem w/ Nardil for me was the weight gain :/ If you have low self-esteem/self-loathing and can't afford to gain a few ponds I'd probably recommend trying Parnate first.

I was one of the unfortunate people who has blood pressure issues w/ Parnate spontaneously (not due to taking something contradicted). Once I got to 40mg my BP would elevate after every dose.

I take Marplan now. I'd been successful on that from 2010 through 2017 when the only company that makes it botched their ability to manufacture it. After a year of being unavailable they're currently importing a supply from Denmark for the few of us who take it. It's supposed to be widely available by the end of the year. It's milder than Nardil but for those of us it works for it really does work. It seems to be effective for people w/ depersonalization issues.

So yea while Nardil is probably the better choice "feeling" wise I'd recommend trying Parnate first. Just cause the weight gain usually turns out to be a deal breaker for many people. I even tried to offset it by taking Metformin+exercising and still gained 15lbs in the year I was on it.

Thanks for the replies. I will go with Nardil as I dont mind potentially gaining some weight IF the drug really helps.

I had the weight gain problem with Nardil as a young adult. Years later (now middle-aged) I'm still struggling with my weight (which had never been a problem before). I've been taking Parnate for a while. Social anxiety isn't a part of my (mostly "typical"/"melancholic") symptom profile, but I've tried pretty much all the standard ADs, and while none have helped a whole lot, Parnate is the one that has helped most. It is somewhat activating (if you look at the structure it could even be considered an amphetamine analog, depending how you define "analog"). If you do decide to give Parnate a try, the main point I'd want to make is that if you have any cardiovascular health issues, be sure that your BP, etc. are monitored closely, especially when you're first starting it, finding the right dose, etc.

I hope you don't get the infamous weight-gain side effect that causes so many people difficulties with phenelzine, but if you do, my recommendation would be to try to d/c it and switch before you get to a point where it will be really hard to get down to a healthy weight again. Certainly this is coloured by my own experience!

Nardil has worked better than Parnate for me. You try one and then try the other. No biggie. Ive tried everything in my quest.
