Metformin and statins seem to help mental illness

In general:

This new study looked at data for 142,691 patients in Sweden with "Serious Mental Illness" who also took statins for high blood pressure or biguanides like Metformin to treat diabetes (I take it to try to keep off weight from Nardil - and there are studies shows it works to prevent Zyprexa weight gain).

Apparently people taking statins and/or Metformin had less psychiatric symptoms over the periods they were taking them. Interesting. For me this just makes me feel better about having Metformin in my cocktail to try to mitagate weight gain (although it hasn't been 100% effective). I'm not sure I agree that these medications would be effective if repurposed though. Thoughts?

Yes, I have read this before. Statins can increase neurogenesis through some mechanism.

Metformin may improve mood via insulin sensitization in the brain. Insulin resistance in the brain is linked to poor brain function and metformin may help to reverse this. Also it interacts with OCT (organic cation transporter) receptors which may have some influence on neurotransmitter levels.

im all about some metformin. my shrinks were always too lazy to do the prescribing ("talk to your family doctor," yawn..."), but I've seen and heard about excellent results.

statins...blah. be sure to take a quality coenzyme q10 @ a high(ish) dose, if these are prescribed.

Yeah Metformin seems to facilitate neurogenesis.. I have read. I cant say if it helps my depression. There were many other factors when i started.

That's interesting. Maybe it depends on where the neurogenesis occurs.

I'm sad that your depression remains inadequately treated.

Define adequate. I was saying that i improved and Metformin might have played a role in that.

I obviously misunderstood you.

In your previous post, you stated, "I cant say if it helps my depression."

I concluded that you still had a depression that was inadequately treated.

What is adequate? I can't speak for everyone. I guess "adequate" means different things to different people.

Talking depression, 25% of the 50% improvement were not due to meds!

Anything that pushes back against a chronic disease should be helpful to mood. Especially if unseen inflammation is reduced, unseen cytokines reduced, unseen stress on the body reduced, and unseen infection reduced.

I can see how those meds could play a role in that.
