Does anyone know what happened to this board?

Posted by KathrynLex on August 12, 2018, at 12:35:54

Back in the early 2000's, I found Psycho-Babble, and it was a Godsend because Prozac had pooped out (after almost a decade!) and I was about to take the plunge into Lexapro. The people here are amazing, and helped me through a very scary transition onto a new medication that gave me my life back for five years. It's so great to see some familiar names from those days, and I hope some of them read this, knowing they really, really helped me.

Fast forward about ten years, and I returned to the board. Dr. Bob had completely disappeared. He wasn't moderating posts or responding to questions. Very few people were posting anymore, and it broke my heart to see such a wonderful community disappearing. I actually emailed Dr. Bob, and pleaded with him to reestablish his connection to this website, or turn the admin tasks over to someone else. It seemed like he was gone for several years (does anyone know the story behind his absence?)

I cam back here several days ago because I've stopped 10 mg of Lexapro cold turkey so I can start taking Nardil in about 10 days. I was so relieved to see there are still people posting, and that Dr. Bob appears to have resumed his involvement (to a limited extent).

I've tried to find other online support networks, but this one in particular seems to attract very intelligent people who really know their way around medication. I've posted similar questions to Facebook groups and then to this board, and the quality of information I can get here is significantly higher than what I've found in other corners of the internet.

I noticed a lot of the posts are older, but there are still people who talk every couple of days. Is the board limping along, or is this just a slow time and things will pick back up? I'm interested in hearing thoughts from some other folks, and maybe a few of the folks who have been her since the beginning could chime in?

Philippa, I remember you from many years ago, and it's so good to see you here! (I can't tell you how much you've helped me over the years, and hopefully I can find a way to pay it forward.)

If you have time, could you chime in on what's happened to this board and whether or not you think it's going to be a thriving community again?

Yeah, babble seems to have demonstrated a mini comeback in recent months / years.

The environment is outdated, but (to be honest) its the information, and ease of use that matter (IMHO).

One benefit is that google searches for many different topics on meds will bring up historical babble content.

yes, this board's outline on how it works is still from the 1990's, but yes the amount of information that was written here, it's linked to google, whatever you write here on these boards they go to google, for alot....of people to see

think babble started declining i think in 2009, because social media became a mainstream way of information, this board is old technology and it was mainly popular in the 2000s, posting boards, the boards of the 2000s and late 90s

yes, big decrease in activity, never see the deputies like they used to be, and the electricity kind went down, but we're still here so.....main posters is what you see on most boards, sls, alex, lamdage, linkage, me, sigi, beckett, roslynn, petermartian, ed uk, hugh, blueberry, mogger, phillipa, kondrian..... all posters more than that, but compared to the huge response rate in the 2000s, yes it's declined

the info provided here is pretty good, still

Hello I do not remember your real life name. But in my opinion with no monitoring of posts due to no active Deputies. And the disappearance of Dr Bob. One particular poster sabotaged all the threads thus the board was shut down for a number of months. During the time period just before it was shut down quite a few posters left because they were both shall I say angry and rather fed up with the lack of monitoring. Wish you had Babblemail. Phillipa

I'm glad to see it's doing better, and hopefully the momentum continues. I agree with you, the platform is straight forward, and really easy to use. (It makes me nostalgic for the days before the crash of the economy in 2008 and the world of all things Web 2.0.)

Being able to do a Google search on this site is such a fabulous resource, and I'm not really sure what I'd do without it. -K

I'm really glad babble is making a comeback, and I hope the momentum continues. Like you, I enjoy the platform. It makes me nostalgic for the days before the '08 crash and before the phrase "Web 2.0" was everywhere. And the search function here is such a goldmine of information. I need to start recommending it more people.

I could see some people turning to Facebook and Twitter instead of sticking around here. It's just been interesting to watch the board change over the years. And I couldn't agree more - the information here is outstanding.

Hi Philippa! My name is Kathryn, and it's good to hear from you. I can see how complications like Dr. Bob's disappearance and a poster who sabotaged all the threads, could make things a lot worse. From what I can tell, Dr. Bob posts every so often, which is good. But I have to admit I lost some respect for him when he just vanished, and din't leave someone else in charge of making sure the lights stayed on. But in any case, it's good to back, and I appreciate your insights about the future of the board.

I do hope at some point people return and also go the other boards. I fear psychology is not going to have people return. So many there had shared what they considered to much. Good to see you back. Phillipa

Yeah, the internet has got progressively worse (IMHO). It used to be all about the content. Now it's all about the presentation, and how likely they are to keep you viewing their adds.

I too liked the internet in a simpler form, where people still had lives independent of it.

Hi, I recently got back on the board for the vast amount of helpful info which I've not found elsewhere. And for the posters who know their stuff and who've have taken the time to answer my gazillion questions...

When this board was inoperable, and even before, I developed relationships with posters on a site Daily Strength. In order to accommodate a younger crowd (?) on mobile devices, the format was changed, making tracking conversations impossible. That was such a loss :( I like the straightforward, old school presentation of Babble.

Although there was camaraderie at Daily Strength, the information from brainiac and researched posters was missing. At Crazy Meds (I think that's what that place is called), there was too much snark. The posters here, in general, were and are fairly earnest and kind.

Heavy-handed and wrong-headed moderation from the top crushed this board imho. Not the deputies (I miss them!). So many people I miss :,( This board was a boon shortly after I started serious medication trials.

I still search it.

I appreciate hearing everyone's perspective on what happened to this board. It's still an amazing resource, and I hope it has a renaissance soon!
