Nardil has been such a disappointment for me

Posted by PeterMartin on August 10, 2018, at 0:08:32

Just have to vent. After 8yrs of great success on 30 & 40mg of Marplan I was forced to switch at the start of this year.

I tried Parnate but like my first trial of it (2010) I had spontaneous blood pressure spikes (210/120ish) after the first or second dose of the day. Too risky.

So I've been on Nardil since February (~6months). A good 4 months of that has been on the max of 90mg. It's soooo inconsistent. It definitely helps w/ social anxiety (I say high to neighbors much more and don't stress out when talking to people) but that's the best it's done. There have been decent days where I feel it's kinda working but those tended to be more when I was at 60 & 75.

Many days I don't even want to stay up past 8pm which is very unusual for me. I sleep a lot. I'm not motivated nor can I push myself to focus on something. With Marplan I used to get the opposite. I used to call it reverse ADD where I couldnt' stop working on something - perhaps it was a bit of hypomania but it was great. With Nardil I just want the days to end (sleep) a lot of the time (like right now at 10pm).

I'm just kinda angry that Nardil has such high regard compared to Marplan (and almost everything else) yet I'm taking the max and feel like the sides are the only effects it's having. I have bad urinary retention (min or so to start), low blood pressure (90/60ish), and no ability to orgasm or really enjoy any of that. I've fought off the weight gain for the most part w/ Metformin. Only gained about 10lbs and that's w/o watching my diet (lots of pancakes for breakfast/cheesesteaks/ice cream).

Maybe it's the Metformin somehow canceling out the Nardil. Maybe my other meds (Lamictal Taro brand) are failing me. Whatever the case 90mg of Nardil isn't doing jack most of the time.

I'm rolling it back to 75 to see if maybe I'll find that better. If not I'm just gonna cry and face the fact that I'll have a struggle ahead to find stability. I'm pretty sure I'll go to Marplan once it's on the market again (hopefully by end of yr per manufacturer). I just never expected Nardil to be so ineffective...

ugh.

Just venting. Thx.

You could try a night of total sleep deprivation.

Hi Peter,

Your post caught my attention because I'm going to start Nardil soon. (First I need to get Lexapro out of my system.) It's so odd to me that Marplan disappeared from the market, but I'm glad it will be available again by the end of the year. Hopefully that will get things back on track for you.

K

This is a very interesting suggestion.

I actually took some Nuvigil that I used to take last year yesterday and went the whole day w/o a nap. The burst of dopamine helped a little too. Going to try dropping Nardil to 75 (been 2 days now) since I keep reading it needs some MAO to metabolize......

See I'm feeling ok today after taking some Nuvigil yesterday and only taking 75mg the past two days.

That's why it's been so frustrating. Lots of ups and down but it does work extremely well for most people. Hopefully I can still make it work for me <sigh>

Good luck on your trial.

I'm glad you're feeling good today. There are so many ups and downs on medication, and I totally understand your frustration. Fingers crossed the good days keep coming for you!
