Who's had Genetic Testing for ADs? Discussion....?

Posted by Mtom on July 31, 2018, at 14:08:32

I recently had Genetic Testing for response to AD's, with phenotype/genotype classifications as either Normal Metabolizer, Intermediate Metabolizer or Poor Metabolizer for a number of drugs (they included more than just ADs). This is supposed to help inform your doctors in choices of AD's & other meds. However there were discrepancies in Classification of NM and IM between the 2 Research Agencies used to extract data, and no explanations. I've done some of my own research, this field is burgeoning, but apparently there is still much to be learned.

My own research has found it difficult to get definitive answers and/or relevant full text articles.

Interested in hearing from others who have had this testing, if they found benefits in helping them choose ADs, helped to explain adverse affects or non response, etc. Thanks!

While I'm not understanding the depth of your post, such as NM or IM, the test affirmed what I knew from my trail and error. Agents that work on norepinephrine, for instance, are helpful. Confirmed I was on a compatible AD (trintellix), and I do well with stimulants, needing more than average amount. Maybe I'm a more rapid metabolizer? Lamotrigine was also a good fit (which I'm on). Lithium was NOT. I always hated the med that left me with a permanent tremor. My thumbs twitch sometimes.

I can find my test somewhere.

Nothing earthshaking. But I'm stable atm.

Oh! But my doc found it interesting. He went down his psychopharmacologist rabbit hole, deep in thought. It's endearing.

There are some limits to what the tests can tell you. They are telling you how to metabolize a certain drug, but they cannot tell you how that drug affects you condition.

For example, you might metabolize say, paxil really slowly. This doesn't necessarily mean that paxil won't hit the right targets in your brain. It may just mean that you respond to a much lower dose than other people.

To me, the metabolic parameters have more influence on effective dose, rather than effective drug.

But, these things are in their infancy.

Where the test may be more informative, is where a drug has an active metabolite. You may get a better idea of which drug (the parent, or the metabolite) is more present in your system.

This makes sense. Thank you.
