from klomopin to diazepam

my dr. is making a switch from klonopin to valium...i'm on 1.5 klonopin.....which equals 30 mg of diazepam.....should he cross taper or can he just switch...thanx

It is usual to cross taper, except for those on very low doses.

so you would cross taper the 1.5 not just do a direct switch?

hi. im with ed_uk, of course. although the 30mgs/diazepam is (roughly...) equivalent to your 1.5mgs/Klonopin, they are different drugs. the valium should prove somewhat more sedating, more pronounced muscle relaxer qualities. I think it also acts more quickly that Klonopin.

its sort of like...if you were to switch from, say, Haldol to Seroquel. Both are tranquilizers, but one is high potency, the other low potency and more sedating.

if one is high potency and one low potency wouldn' that in itself cause problems and my dr is willing to cross taper ...

hi. i think it'll be a good switch, personally. the 30mgs/valium should provide more sedation, especially early on in treatment, plus it has muscle relaxant properties.

its just...getting used to the new sedative, that's all. I guess just try to work with your doctor and take your time making the switch.
